    Vistas - Steve Hodges

    Featuring two melodic motives that are developed texturally and rhythmically throughout the piece, Vistas begins in a light, reflective manner before gradually building into a majestic contrapuntal statement by the brass. A driving percussion introduction begins the Vigoroso section and provides the rhythmic foundation for the second Vista. This minor setting of the initial motives provides an exciting variation that features a variety of meter changes and syncopated passages. A restatement of the initial motives with the driving rhythmic accompaniment begins an extended conclusion that brings the piece to a dynamic finish.

Premiered at Kyo-En V in 2003, Kawagoe Sohwa Wind Ensemble, Masato Sato, conductor.I know the conductor and band inside out, so I enjoyed composing this work very much, thinking about their personalities. The piece features the sax section, and the performance style is characterized by interplay between a vibrant jazz quartet and a solid pops windensemble.Now that the work is published, I hope you add it to your concert repertoire.     American Visions - Mark Lortz

    Composed to embody the sense of American vigor and patriotism, this fast-paced and energetic fanfare, concert opener or contest selection features rousing brass fanfares, lively woodwind motives, and driving percussion. Using a simple motive that alternates between duple and triplet rhythms, this is a great selection to use for teaching the difference between the two.
