Burlesco Romantico - Menno Bosgra
The colourful, compelling starting theme forms the leitmotiv throughout this piece. It is followed by a very rhythmical part with a catchy melody that is literally and figuratively music to the ear. A slow, almost meditative part follows with a beautiful alto saxophone solo that leads to an impressive chorale. The fast sections are once more repeated towards the end, but in another form. A fantastic composition by Menno Bosgra!

In each of the four movements of this major work for concert band, the composer has tried to capture in music something of the spirit of this beautiful Swiss town of Rheinfelden, which lies on the banks of the Rhein. The opening movement, Promenade, sees woodwind and brass alternating short melodic fragments leading to a noble melody from the horns. The dreamy Ballad features a saxophone solo and chorale-like melody. This leads, via a four bar Interlude, to the Scherzo which takes the form of a moto perpetuo.

In the 1980s, the attractive melody became more familiar through its use as the signature tune of the famous television series Reilly, Ace of Spies.The original was written for violin, but in this skilled and appealing arrangement by Ed Keeley the alto saxophone takes the lead.
