The Overture is lively and bustling, the Serenade provides a calm central movement and the vivacious Finale has a slower middle section. This character piece was composed for a competition held in 1962 by the Norwegian Band Federation. Three prices were awarded and Geirr Tveitt won all of them. "The Old Mill on the Brook" was awarded second price after the three-movement work "Sinfonietta de Soffiatori". After this competition, ""The Old Mill on the Brook" is the most performed of all pieces Tveitt wrote for band. It has a special fullness, portraying nature in rich colours, with grass, water, stone, forest and the darkness of traditional Norwegian timber. This new editon for modern instrumentation is written by Stig Nordhagen.
