An arrangement of the famous Jewel Song from Gounod?€s grand opera Faust for soprano and band. Faust, a grand opera composed by the French composer Charles-Francois Gounod was first performed in 1859 but was not well received at first. It eventually became a highly popular opera but that popularity waned in the second half of the twentieth century, partly because of the cost of mounting productions. However, the Jewel Song remains a favourite showpiece for sopranos. This arrangement was featured on the RAF Massed Bands Tour 1996 and recorded on Festival of Music 1996 Polyphonic QPRM 125D. In 1938 Shostakovich composed his Second Jazz Suite at the request of the recently founded State Orchestra for Jazz conducted by Victor Knushevitsky.
