Satoshi Yagisawa is well known for his dramatic symphonic band compositions. Even though he has written relatively few marches, they are also very popular: March Willing and Able is based on a chorale while March Bou Shu is based on a Japanese folk song. The Memory of Our Native Place is a rather unusual piece for Yagisawa, as it actually closely resembles a traditional march. The piece opens with a lively fanfare and is contrasted by the following theme. The trio features a chorale-like melody.

Ravel's ballet, Daphnis and Chlo, was commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev and premiered with the Ballets Russes in Paris in 1912. The ballet is now rarely performed, but its Suite No. 2 remains popular. Intermezzo is the second movement of Satoshi Yagisawa's Clarinet Concerto. The concerto was first performed by Higashi-Hiroshima Wind Ensemble in Hiroshima, Japan in 2010 with guest performer Shinsuke Hashimoto, clarinettist with the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra and was conducted by Atsushi Kageyama. Inspiration for this work came from the fact that both Satoshi Yagisawa and Shinsuke Hashimoto graduated from Musashino Academia Musicae.Clarinet Concerto>/I> is the pinnacle of Satoshi Yagisawa's "Concerto Series" which also features his Suite Concertante for Piano and WindOrchestra, Trumpet Concerto, Trombone Concerto, Saxophone Concertino, andConcertino for Solo Percussion and Wind Orchestra.Yagisawa's characteristic heartfelt theme in the second movement is especially popular and consequently--entitled Intermezzo--it is often performed independently.Soloist: Grade 4

According to his teachers, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), was not particularly gifted. His special talents were acknowledged only in 1865 when he had been working for the Ministry of Finances for some years. In 1866 he was appointed teacher at the Conservatory and applied himself to composing. His oeuvre is fairly extensive and many of his compositions receive a high ranking on the international list of classical music, including his six symphonies, solo concertos (violin concerto and piano concertos), ballets (The Nut Cracker, Swan Lake), and his overtures (1812 and Romeo and Juliette). In 1893 Tchaikovsky died of Cholera after drinking a glass of infectedwater. His Slavonic March is a popular concert piece for symphonic orchestra that is still frequently performed in concert halls. David Well arranged the theme and created a contemporary march in rock style. Tchaikovsky once said to an unsatisfied teacher: 'I will be a great composer within 10 years time.'
