The Call of the Righteous - Score and Parts - Leslie Condon

Program NotesCall of the Righteous is a tone poem that uses the Gospel song melody "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder" as its main theme. An unforgiving opening unison trumpet fanfare leads into the first statement of the tune, which then appears, either in its entirety or in fragments, throughout the piece alongside further thematic material derived from the opening fanfare theme. The reflective central section contains a beautiful original melody, introduced by the clarinet and developed elsewhere, before the music reverts to ideas derived from the opening section, introduced by a recapitulation of the opening fanfare figure, which is further developed to bring the music to a thrilling and dramatic conclusion.Although the music has its creative roots in religious doctrine, it has a lasting and popular appeal that makes it accessible and listenable at every level, with plenty to challenge on both technical and musical levels.

Where Eagles Sing - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

The inspiration for this piece came when the composer visited Florida and the Bird Sanctuary in Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom. He was in the audience to see the rare bird's show where he witnessed some fabulous looking and endangered birds that were trained to perform different tricks that wowed the audience. The highlight for him was the conclusion of the show where the most awesome sight greeted us as an American Bald Eagle soared over the audience. That particular breed of Eagle has been a very rare bird of late. With so few in numbers, it nearly became a member of the sad group of animals that are extinct. The host of the show took great delight in informing the audience that the fantastic creature is now officially safe and no longer classed as endangered. This made a great impact on the composer as the Eagle is an amazing bird, huge in size and power and yet so graceful in flight. This piece is everything associated with the Eagle; bold, powerful and graceful and now free to soar and sing in the American homelands.Where Eagles Sing has been hugely successful as a curtain-raiser (or finale) with brass bands around the world and it is hoped that this version for wind band will be just as popular.

Arthur J Michaels has composed this great number for Wind/Concert Band, and has thoughtfully scored it to support varying instrumentation which may be experienced in school settings.Throughout Antiphonal Overture, different groups of similarly pitched woodwinds and brasses, instrument families, and other instrument combinations 'answer' one another in mainly two-bar phrases. This antiphonal style creates varying timbres and textures throughout the piece.Cues in critical places ensure that smaller groups and those with uneven instrumentation can perform this piece successfully. The ever-changing timbres and textures in Antiphonal Overture are sure to make this piece a popular, challenging work for players and a delight for audiences.Level: Grade 3

    Merry-Go-Round - Tim Paton

Programme notes from the composer, Tim Paton:I heard a recording of a fairground organ playing a fabulous concert waltz from the early 20th century. It struck me that this music was in the same league as another popular concert waltz, "Nights of Gladness". I aurally transcribed it, and set about creating an exciting piece, aiming to capture the 'fun of the fair'.

Sir Roger de Coverley - Frank Bridge

Frank Bridge (1879 - 1941) was one of the leading English composers of his time. In October 1922 he adapted his popular string quartet Sir Roger de Coverley for full symphony orchestra and Sir Henry Wood agreed, at the last minute, to include it in the last night of the Queen's Hall Promenade Concerts at the end of that month. This elaborate and colourful orchestral version has never been widely performed, but has now been brilliantly transcribed by Alastair Wheeler to provide a miniature dance poem for grade 5 level concert band. Bridge's lively treatment of one of England's most famous traditional dance melodies will make a fitting end to any concert, with the strains of Auld Lang Syne introduced by Bridge as a nod towards Sir Roger de Coverley's traditional function as the final dance of a Christmas Ball, as it was in Old Mr. Fezziwig's party in Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

Danceries (Set II) - Kenneth Hesketh

Danceries Set II was commissioned by Keith Allen and Birmingham Symphonic Winds, supported by PRS for Music Foundation and the RVW Trust. The world premire of this work was given by Birmingham Symphonic Winds, conducted by Keith Allen, at the CBSO Centre, Birmingham in 2011. This second set of Danceries continues the format established in Danceries (Set I), namely in using material taken from Playford's Dancing Master, a collection of folk and popular tunes published in the seventeenth century, to form the basis of an extended dance suite. In this set, the melodies have been more abstracted and project only a distant echo of their original forms, but as before, each movement is self-contained, colourful and direct, with its own distinct mood. The outer movements - Jennie's Bawbee and Peascod's Galliarda - share a use of driving percussion writing with a military air. Tom Tinker's Toye and Heart's Ease (movements two and three) are both settings of original melodies. All movements are more extended than in the first set, with a freer use and approach to the material; melodies now occur in various keys and are supported by a greater variety of harmonic colouring. The result is a richer, even more exhilarating set of dances. Danceries has come of age!
