Originally written as part of the Commissioned Works for School Bands sponsored by Carl Fischer on the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of the firm, Ginger Marmalade has become one of the best known of serious twentieth-century works for school band. A humorous program number that plays with the listener's expectations, it is technically simple, but uses unusual sound resources (clapping hands, rapping heels, novel percussion sounds) o produce a work that delights the ear and challenges the mind. Often cited as a cornerstone of the young band repertoire (it is on both the UIL - Texas and NYSSMA required music lists), we are pleased to issue this delightful pieceas part of our Carl Fischer Classic Band Edition.

In Time for the Holidays - Bill Calhoun
In Time for the Holidays is a beginning band treatment of the Christmas favorite Jingle Bells. Complete with the seasonal percussion effects of two wood/temple blocks, sleigh bells and slapstick/whip, this arrangement uses just the first six notes of the B-flat concert scale in each part. This should make the piece very playable for your beginning band's first concert, just In Time for the Holidays.

Inferno in the Lost Pines - Larry Clark
Larry Clark does it again, with a bold new piece for young students, using only the first 6 notes of the Bb scale and two eighth notes on the same pitch as the most difficult rhythm. The piece is meant to depict the struggle that firefighters go through when trying to tame an out of control brush fire. The piece goes right into the main theme without introduction and then moves into a more subdued second theme, in contrast. After a short development of the themes with interplay between the winds and percussion, the piece builds to a strong coda: a great way to showcase your beginning band at a concert or festival.

The Glory Of Christmas
A brilliant and contrapuntally elaborate fantasy on the haunting and beautiful Christmas carol, Greensleeves, (a.k.a. Fanfare and Patrol - Carl Strommen
Beginning with a Copland-esque brass and percussion fanfare, this piece leads to an all-out lush harmonic flourish, subsiding into a military-style patrol march, with the sounds of echoes, evoking troops marching over the hill and then moving away. Fanfare and Patrol finishes off with the climactic return of the main fanfare.

Burst - Sean O'Loughlin
A tour de force concert opener (or a striking closer) that rips right out of the gate with a four-note motive functioning as the genesis for the rest of the piece. It comes complete with bursts offerass fanfares, woodwind flourishes, percussion interjections, and biting harmonies that build tension only resolved at the final chord. Quirks - Brant Karrick
Quirks'a word defined as a sudden sharp turn or an unpredictable peculiarity of behavior or action'demonstrates the capricious nature of the title in its musical character. The music vacillates between fast and slow, happy and sad, extroverted and introverted, and just never goes where you expect. There is plenty of interplay between winds and percussion as the four and three notes of the main motive are tossed about the many instrumental colors. This is a tour-de-force, destined to become a band standard for more advanced bands. You must give this a careful listen.
