A Celebration Overture - Bruce Broughton
The concert opener A Celebration Overture is really an extended fanfare, opening with an energetic brass and percussion motif that forms the basis of most of the piece that follows. A contrasting lyrical section appears shortly after the opening statement and once again before the final push to the end. (4:10)

Wilten Festival Overture - Philip Sparke
To celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten in Innsbruck Philip Sparke composed Wilten Festival Overture. A bold fanfare, led by the horns, forms the opening of the work from which an expressive theme unfolds until the full band reaches a climax. Short solo statements from saxophone, horn and trumpet lead to a recapitulation of this theme which melts into a rhythmic Vivo. A robust melody is is then played by the clarinets and taken up by the whole band before a legato figure leads to a cantabile theme, again presented by the clarinets. The original Vivo melody reappears before the opening fanfare is briefly heard and the work comes to an end with ashort Coda. A great experience for the whole band!

In total he wrote some 30 operettas and Steven Verhaert selected Die schne Galathea for his arrangement. This splendid overture is a real gem for lovers of the operetta style which is sometimes (unfairly) looked down upon.

Norwegian Overture - Traditional
It is not entirely sure where the melody originates that forms the basis for Norwegian Overture. Most sources point in the direction of a certain J.H. Nebelong in about 1881. It is also possible that he was the first to note down this traditional melody and put his name to it.The lyrics are by a certain A.H. Brorson and were set to the music at a later date. The original title is "store hvide flok", which means "the big white herd". Several composers have used this theme, including Edvard Grieg and the Danish Carl Nielsen.

Tam O'Shanter Overture, Op. 51 - Malcolm Arnold
This is a magnificent work! Based on a famous poem by Scottish poet Robert Burns, the overture is a tone poem which eloquently expresses the intense moods of the frightening tale told by the poet. John Paynter's wonderful arrangement for symphonic band is without question a major contribution to the literature.
