Jazz Suite No. 2 - Lyric Waltz - Dimitri Shostakovich
In 1938 Shostakovich composed his Second Jazz Suite at the request of the recently founded State Orchestra for Jazz conducted by Victor Knushevitsky. This suite was originally scored for a complete symphony orchestra to which four saxophones, an accordion and a guitar had been added. The Jazz Suite no. 1 in three movements, composed in 1934, had been written for a smaller ensemble. The title 'Jazz Suite' is rather misleading, as the composer definitely uses the style of light music. Back in 1928, the twenty-two-year-old Shostakovich had already composed some light music. A bet among friends to make an orchestration of the popular song 'Tea for Two' in less then one hour time, causedhim to compose 'Tahiti Trot'. Shostakovich easily won the bet as he completed the original and witty arrangement within only forty minutes!

In The Pioneers Philip Sparke salutes the bicentenary of an expedition by two all time American heroes - Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were commissioned by US President Thomas Jefferson to find the headwaters of the Missouri and a route to the Pacific following the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the USA. They set out as the 'Corps of Discovery' from Louisville, Kentucky, in May 1804 and not only did they succeed in reaching the Pacific through hostile territory, but also found their way back - in 3 years! The piece is not descriptive of the journey but gives the composer the opportunity to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this amazing feat. Add a touchof the wild-west to any concert with this exciting work.

The son of a jazz pianist and a singer, Roger Cicero (born 1970 in Berlin) stepped onto stage for the first time when he was only seven years old! He went on to study piano, guitar and singing, and appeared with well-known swing and jazz orchestras. After first working as a composer, he began performing as a vocalist and represented Germany in the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest. Peter Schller has combined three hits from an artist who makes the language of Goethe swing: Frauen regier'n die Welt, Nicht artgerecht and Zieh' die Schuhe aus. This arrangement contains optional parts for piano/keyboard, and electric or bass guitar.

The Bermuda Mystery - Wouter Lenaerts
The rather static character of the first part is built up of only 1 bar, which consists of a sequence of two extended triads above a pedal note (B-flat). The main motive, derived from these triads, is introduced by the horns giving a threatening initial atmosphere. This is abruptly taken over by the clarinet and the oboe, after which violence erupts.In contrast to the mysterious character of the first section, the second part shows a more resigned atmosphere with long drawn out phrases. These are constantly interupted by references to the initial material and develop into a dramatic climax. The main motif reappears for a final time on the trumpet, which, under theinfluence of the second theme, takes on a more resigned character as it gradually fades into silence.

Renaissance DancesAn homage to European flavor and style from the time of Gervaise, Susato and Praetorius, after the introduction, the steps of courante, pavane, galliard, and branle appear. Please perform with vigor and contrast!II. TangoThis section is more an earthy and piquant Argentine romance than an elegant continental tango. Perform the alto saxophone theme and solis for each section very passionately!III. HoedownHere is the scene of the rodeo and a free-spirited western swing feel. The introductory clarinet solo can be done ad libitum. Maintain the mood by swinging slightly throughout. Present this movement playfully!IV. Spirituals (Bon-Odori-Uta)This is a requiem on the Bon-Okuri ceremony guiding ancestors back to the spiritual world. The initial piccolo motif repeats a chant in the rhythm of bon odori (a bon dance) and develops as a variation on Owara-bushi, a beautiful folk song from Toyama prefecture. The traditional bon odori have evolved into summer festival entertainment.V. Belly DanceThe belly dance is typically Arabic, its music performed by strings and drums.All should play with passion and flamboyance and a sense of bacchanalia and abandon. 2011 was a disastrous year for Japan: on March 11 the northeast of the country suffered a violent earthquake, which triggered a huge tsunami and caused massive damage to people and the environment. The ensuing problems with the nuclear reactor atFukushima only increased the misery: a black day in the country's history...One almost inevitable consequence of such dramatic circumstances is the particular damage suffered by the cultural arts. And so it was in Japan: various high school wind orchestras in the effected areas lost their practice rooms and/or instruments.It will take a long time before the damage suffered is repaired - and it will take great effort to overcome the psychological effects, too. Focusing on the latter, Yutada Nishida (director of The Bandwagon radio program) asked a few composers fora simple work that could be played by many orchestras. It just so happened that the Osakan Philharmonic Winds (with whom Jan Van der Roost had conducted a concert exclusively of his own works on September 25th) had had a similar idea. This concert saw the baptism of Song of Hope. This pieceimmediately struck a chord with musicians and audience alike: it begins bleakly in the low register and evolves to a more open, optimistic close. There really is hope for better times!

Commissioned in 1994 by the Royal Air Force, 'Scramble!' is a concert overture for symphonic wind band inspired by images of the RAF's airfields during the Battle of Britain, immortalised for ever in such films as 'Reach for theSky'. The pastoral opening depicts the lull before the storm: the young pilots sitting in wicker chairs outside their barracks on a sunlit morning. The peace is, of course, deceptive, suddenly amid siren sounds, there is a shoutof 'Scramble!', and a rush to the waiting planes. In no time at all the squadron is airborne, heading for a skirmish over the English Channel and beyond. A lyrical central section featuring a solo cornet depicts the stillnessmanypilots described as they flew to engage the enemy, before the battle breaks out once more. For those who returned, it would be only a short while before, once again, they would hear the familiar shout of 'Scramble!'
