The Gilded Theatre - Kenneth Hesketh
The Gilded Theatre was commissioned by the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain on the occasion of its fortieth anniversary. They gave the first performance on 10th August 2008, at St. John's Smith Square, London conducted by James Gourlay.The Gilded Theatre can, in some ways, be seen as a continuation of dramatic forms as presented in a previous piece by Hesketh, Diaghilev Dances. Unlike the Dances, however the music in The Gilded Theatre is conceived as one continuous span and stretches of music are also subtitled and refer to stock characters or scenarios redolent of the commedia dell'arte or 17th Century French Theatre.The subtitles are Rideau, Les Idiots Ou Les Amants, Le Combat Commence, Desespoir, L'apparition, Folie, La Mort, Rideau. The music narative progresses through dramatic, comedic, romantic and aggressive moods supporting the idea of the abstract play to which the the above subtitles refer. Throughout the piece the composer has sought to challenge the players both technically and emotionally, and it is the players themselves who are in fact the protagonists in the piece.

Soliloquies From A Quiet Place - Peter Meechan
soliloquyn."An act of speaking one's thoughts aloud when by oneself or regardless of any hearers"During summer 2018 I took a vacation at a family cabin on the banks of Buffalo Pound Lake in Saskatchewan, Canada. It is a beautifully isolated location, which provides for a near perfect view of the night skies. Gradually, as your eyes adjust to the dark, more and more stars reveal themselves to you. Time seems to stop, and you can't help reflecting in every way possible. As insignificant as viewing the heavens like this can make you feel, you also know your fleeting view is a unique moment, a moment you will never see end.One night, having sat outside until the sun began to rise, I went back inside and wrote a short chorale at the piano. It didn't have a place in any piece I was writing at that time but knew those few measures of reflection would find their place in a composition in the future - and it is from those few measures that Soliloquies From A Quiet Place grew.Told through the two trumpet soloists, these are my reflections and thoughts from that night and many others sat gazing in to the heavens.Soliloquies From A Quiet Place was written for soloists Ryan Anthony and Jens Lindemann, conductor Jerry Junkin, and The University of Texas Wind Ensemble. Vranjanka - Kenneth Hesketh
Vranjanka (pronounced VRAHN-yahn-kah) means "From Vranje," a town in southern Serbia. It is loosely based on the traditional folksong ano Duo. The melody is extant in two versions, one in 7/8 and one in 3/4. The musical form of the piece starts with a fairly slow introductory section, a faster second section cast in a set of variations on the folksong. Vranjanka was commissioned by Timothy and Hilary Reynish in memory of their son William.

Dreaming of Dreams - Thomas Kelly
Dreaming of Dreams is a slow-paced and 'feel-good' piece, written for grade 2 Wind Band. After a short reflective introduction, the light and delicate main melody is introduced by the first clarinets followed by a broad and nostalgic counter melody at letter B played by the tenor saxophone, bassoon, first trombone and euphonium. At section D the main melody returns in the first clarinets, this time augmented by the first trumpets and at E we hear the main melody and counter melody together. After a repeat of the opening material, a new melody is featured at letter G played by the first flutes in a new key. The main melody and counter melody are then heard for one final, triumphant time, back in the home key. Fragments of the main melody are then heard throughout different sections of the band as the piece fades away to the final chord.

The Proclamation of Christmas - Score and Parts - Stephen Bulla
Program NotesOriginally written as the 'show opener' for one of The Salvation Army's spectacular annual Christmas Carol concerts in London, and premiered by The International Staff Band, Stephen Bulla's overture The Proclamation of Christmas is an extended work that features a number of popular Christmas tunes, including Hark The Herald Angels Sing, Ding Dong Merrily on High, and The First Nowell. There are also two slightly less well-known tunes that are linked to the carols - While Shepherds Watched and Angels from the Realms of Glory - and the piece concludes with a final flourish from O Come, All Ye Faithful.Its dramatic opening and imaginative structure make it a rewarding piece to rehearse and perform, and it certainly fulfills all the requirements of a Christmas show opener! So, we firmly believe that this overture will be a popular addition to Christmas repertoire for concert band in the same way as it was in its original version for brass band.

After receiving the commission from this work from Institut collgial Vincent Massey Collegiate Wind Ensemble and their conductor, Matthew Abraham, I was in the fortunate position of being able to spend time with the group talking about what music means to them, what it means to community and society, and also how they currently felt about that current community and society both from a personal perspective and a wider vision.It became clear that these grade 9 - 12 students had a deep understanding of the environment around them both locally and the world at large, and the difficulties that surround us all at this time. A sense of serious concern for the ecology of the planet was of key concern as was apparent which seemed to channel through a wider concern at the lack of humanity that we see every day in the street, in our city, in our country and in our world.let this place was written in response to those very concerns, and my anger that we have - in what feels like a very short space of time - descended in to a world where children are separated from their parents at the US border, where racism and hatred have become commonplace, where anti-Semitism has once again reared its ugly head, where gun and knife crime hardly makes the news such is its frequency, where we allow, as citizens of this planet, children to be victims of chemical weapons in Syria, destruction of human life in Yemen; the list is almost endless.We seem to have forgotten the many warnings that history has taught us, and none more so than the words of the plaque situated at Auschwitz-Birkenau:"For ever let this place be a cry of despair and a warning to humanity, where the Nazis murdered about one and a half million men, women, and children, mainly Jews from various countries of Europe.Auschwitz-Birkenau 1940 - 1945"The title of the work, let this place, is taken from the plaque and is an invitation for us all to consider those words. The first part of the work "cry" is both a reference to those that perished at the concentration camps and the sadness we should all feel that the words inscribed have been so easily forgotten.The second part "despair" is where we are now; the concerns that were raised by the students, the anger I feel, the distress that we see on a daily basis. The piece doesn't end, it merely stops; a challenge to all who play, listen and experience the piece to make a choice about the kind of world we want to live in - to cry, to despair, or to listen to the "warning to humanity".let this place was commissioned by, and dedicated to, Institut collgial Vincent Massey Collegiate Wind Ensemble and their conductor, Matthew Abraham.Peter Meechan 2019

Program NotesMajor Joy Webb has a unique and special gift for writing songs that achieve massive popularity, both for the purity of their musical integrity and for the depth of their poetic and literal strength. One of the members of The Salvation Army's 1960s phenomenon "The Joystrings," Joy Webb has a string of popular songs to her name, several of which contributed to the charts successes of enjoyed by the group. In more recent years, many of her tunes have found their why into instrumental repertoire.A prime example of Joy's remarkable gifting is her beautiful Share My Yoke. Although the deeply spiritual words of Share My Yoke may be unfamiliar to some, the sheer beauty of the melody is without doubt. The chorus is reproduced here to offer an insight into the song's meaning:Your slightest movement I will feel and understand.Share my yoke, and come the way that I must go,In our togetherness my peace you'll know.The world beholding us will see it's so.Calling for real sensitivity both from soloist and accompanying group, this is an extremely rewarding piece to play - and a moving listening experience for the audience.The arranger, Ivor Bosanko, who lives in California following retirement from the post of Territorial Music Director in The Salvation Army's USA Western Territory, is himself a respected songwriter, composer and arranger. He has produced this wonderfully sensitive and evocative arrangement of the song for cornet soloist and band. Already widely used and recorded in its original brass band form, this arrangement for concert band will undoubtedly be a useful and valuable addition to repertoire.
