Nearly 400 years ago (in 1609) Henry Hudson and his ship, the Half Moon, explored the majestic river that was later to bear his name. Half Moon on the Hudson pays tribute to this area of New York and the spirit of exploration and adventure. A regal fanfare announces the beginning of the work, followed by an energetic and rhythmic section that features various sections of the band answering one another. An emotional and chorale-like middle section provides a calmer mood along with lush harmonizations. Score and parts.Born in Richmond Hill, New York, on 10 December 1913, Morton Gould was recognised early on as a child prodigy with theability to improvise and compose. At the age of six he had his first composition published. He studied at the Institute of Musical Art (now the Juilliard School), but his most important teachers were Abby Whiteside (Piano) andVincent Jones (composition).Gould enjoyed an illustrious career. In addition to gaining a Pulitzer Prize for 'Stringmusic', he was Musical America's 1994 Composer-of-the-Year and recieved a Kennedy Center Honor inrecognition of lifetime contributions to American culture.A long-time member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, Gould was elected president of ASCAP in 1986, a post he held until 1994.In 1986 he was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. He also served on the board of the American Symphony Orchestra League and on the National Endowment for the Arts music panel.

This is on of the group Chicago's most popular ballads, still doing great after beeing recorded in 1972 on their fifth album. Chicago's main songsriter, Robert lamm, wrote this after a particulary exhilarating 4th of July spen in New York's Central Park, where there were steel drum players, singers, dancers and jugglers. This was originally used as a soundtrack to an unreleased home video. It became the group's first gold single.

March of the Tin Soldiers employs themes from Leon Jessels popular march, Parade of the Tin Soldiers. Originally composed for piano, it was later published for orchestra and gained international acclaim in Russia, France, and finally here in the United States on Broadway. Its probably best known for its use by the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes as part of their Christmas Spectacular in New York City. Castles In Europe - Europe
Composer James Reese Europe, one of the most famous African-American musicians of his day, was called the "Martin Luther King of music" by pianist Eubie Blake. The first African-American bandmaster in the United States Army, Europe gained great popularity as a dance band leader, a military band leader, recording artist, and a composer of merit. Known in New York music circles, and also for touring Europe with his National Guard band, Europe is remembered today for composing several works, including "Castles In Europe" with the subtitle "The Innovation Trot - Ragtime March." This delightful work is arranged for today's concert band by Chandler L. Wilson. An enjoyable ragtime work from an American composer to be remembered!
