The Cherokee nation had a vibrant culture for many centuries in what is now the southeastern United States. The beginning and ending sections of this piece are based on a folk song that is commonly referred to as Cherokee Morning Song. After an effective Maestoso introduction, the bright Allegro really punches out the main theme. The contrasting Andante section in 3/4 has a beautiful melody first presented in the upper woodwinds and then later with the full ensemble. Nringen is a tune associated with traditional wedding celebrations (especially on the morning of the second day of celebration). The song exists in both vocal (stev) and instrumental (gangar) versions. A springdans is a dance in triple meter, usually with an energetic tempo. The traditional triplet ornaments have been removed from this springdans to make it accesible for young wind players.
