(Mahler over zijn 2de symfonie "Wederopstanding", Juli 1894)*"You are clubbed to the ground and then lifted to the highest heights on angels' wings"Commissioned by and dedicated to Concertband Maasmechelen (BE), conducted by Mark Prils.Kevin Houben was inspired for this work by Gustav Mahler's 2nd symphony, better known as the Resurrection symphony.The work can be regarded as a Ma(h)lerei of various compositional and spherical elements that refer to the Austrian composer but that appear in this composition in an embedded, contemporary way.As Mahler often drew his inspiration from nature, the opening of this piece brings nature right to the audience. The work starts with a solo for alto flute accompanied by a pedal note in four octaves with harmonic responses echoing the solo.From the start, Kevin Houben provides Mahler's material with a contemporary touch. He replaces the nature sounds that Mahler uses (perfect fourth) with tritone intervals. The off stage trumpet signals have been preserved but are provided with a new accompaniment. Gradually, throughout the work, the orchestra undergoes its own independent development. Mahler's musical signature remains recognizable, but Kevin Houben allows it - e.g. through the use of various timbres - to flourish in a more modern musical idiom, which characterizes numerous contemporary compositions for wind band (cfr. Where Angels Fly).The work comes to a grandiose end with a passage of the famous chorale from Mahler's 2nd symphony. The rich orchestration of this chorale gives the listener the illusion of the presence of a choir and organ without actually using them.In Resurrection, each instrument group comes into its own: in solo fragments, in transparent thematic passages or in splendid tuttis. Therefore, the work forms an interesting challenge for a wind band on several levels, both technically and melodically - the latter due to the long suspenseful melodic phrases that the musical structure requires.The piece is accessible to a wide audience and can be regarded as an enrichment for any concert programme. The Symphonic Prelude in C minor is an orchestral composition from the circle of the Austrian composer Anton Bruckner. The unearthing of this work, discovered shortly after World War II, has created confusion, leading to a second, reduced version being attributed to Gustav Mahler, a theory which still holds sway in musical circles today, although there is a high probability that the original composition is indeed by Bruckner himself. Rudolf Krzyzanowski (1895-1911), a pupil of Bruckner, transcribed the score in 1876. The 43-page manuscript bears the inscription Rudolf Krzyzanowski cop. 1876 on the first page; while on the last page is written in blue pencil: By Anton Bruckner.Thomas Doss used a facsimile of this autograph copy as the basic of his instrumentation of the prelude for symphonic wind orchestra.

Max Steiner was born in Vienna in 1888, and grew up surrounded by music. He was a student of the Imperial Academy of Music, having among his teachers Gustav Mahler. In 1936 he signed an agreement with Warner. Steiner, considered the father of symphonic music in Hollywood style. One of his most famous and popular masterworks is, without any doubt, Gone with the Wind (1939). The movie was an immediate success and won ten Academy Awards. In spite of the years passed, this movie still moves young audiences around the world. Lorenzo Bocci has chosen the song Tara's Theme from this movie and turned the romantic music into an arrangement for concert band.

The Four Winds by Evan Hause for Concert Band. The Four Winds is an homage by the composer to some of the well-known band composers, such as Clifton Williams and John Barnes Chance, as well as earlier wind masters like Holst and Mahler. Evan Hause was a student of William Bolcom, and his more advanced band work, Tango Variations, has been performed and recorded by some of the top university ensembles. This fantasy-overture is appropriate for the intermediate high school band, contrasting brisk fanfare music with variations on a Romantic theme. (Grade 4) Dur: 6:00.

Cantiphonia - Concerto For Euphonium - Bert Appermont
This spectacular three-part concerto (Contrasti, Romanza and Fugato) for euphonium and grand brass-band orchestra by Bert Appermont was composed upon request by the Swiss euphonium virtuoso Ueli Kipfer who created it in November 2004 with the Schweizer Armee Spiel conducted by Jan Cober. The composer was inspired more by its mood than the analysis of works by Mahler and Rachmaninov. This concerto, which is quite demanding for the soloist and a challenge for the orchestra, is probably one of the most innovative works by Bert Appermont to date. £148.00Trois Rag-Caprices - Darius Milhaud
The French composer Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a member of the 'Groupe des Six'. This group of six composers gathering Honegger, Poulence, Auric, Durey, Tailleferre and Milhaud, imitated Erik Satie by revolting against the deeply rooted traditional conventions of that time. They reacted against impressionism (Debussy) and romanticism (Wagner, Mahler) and felt very strongly about the music of Satie and Strawinsky. Milhaud's most popular work is undoubtedly the ballet 'La Cration du Monde', one of the most striking examples of jazz influences in classical music. The premire at the 'Th?tre des Champs Elyses' in October 1923 caused a real scandal with the Paris public.The 'Trois Rag-Caprices' for piano were composed one year earlier, in the summer of 1922, and could be considered as a kind of preliminary sketch for 'La Cration du monde'. There are indeed clear similarities between both compositions as to the rhythmical and harmonic aspects. The 'Trois Rag-Caprices' were orchestrated for symphony orchestra by Milhaud himself some time later. The same happened to 'Saudades do Brasil' (1920), a piano composition punctuated with Latin-American influences, which was written after his stay in Rio de Janeiro (1917-18) exactly as his ballet 'Le Boeuf sur le Toit'. Johan de Meij's orchestration of 'Trois Rag-Caprices' for symphonic band is a most welcome addition next to the original band works of Milhaud, such as 'Suite Fran?aise' (1945) and 'West Point Suite' (1951).
