On the Wings of Swallows - Michael Sweeney
True hope is swift, and flies with swallow's wings - from Shakespeare's Richard III. This dramatic new work from Michael Sweeney is a multi-styled piece written in a through-composed fashion. Developing through pensive opening sonorities, a driving main theme, and a slow section featuring a haunting alto sax solo, the piece ultimately builds to a climatic brass statement. Passages - Michael Sweeney
The term passage can variously describe a passageway of travel, a musical phrase, or perhaps the soul's moving on from this world to the next. In this work for band, dark and rich sonorities are contrasted with a lilting,Celtic-flavored melody as it alternates with striking passages from the brass. Later, an alto sax soloist adds a haunting quality to the mood followed by a return of the ethnic drumming heard earlier. This unique and rewardingcomposition is beautifully paced and skillfully orchestrated using every section of the band. Dur: 7:00 (Grade 4)

Free Running - Robert Buckley
Free Running is an exciting, high velocity tour-de-force that will keep both musicians and the audience on the edge of their seats. Inspiration for the work came from the pointillistic paintings of Seurat (who created images by using tiny spots of primary colors on his canvas) and from Parkour, a form of urban acrobatics in which participants, known as free runners, use the structures of the rural landscape to perform catlike leaps and sprints. The resulting creation is a non-stop piece of music made up of only staccato notes in a constant rhythm moving through different sections of the ensemble. Free Running was commissioned by the Troy University Symphony Band for the 2011Alabama Music Educators Association Convention. Ideal for concert or festival use, it is guaranteed to leave the audience breathless! Dur: 5:10Recorded by the Troy University Symphony Band - Ralph Ford, conductor
