Einar Englund (1916-1999) was a major Finnish composer of symphonies, concertos and film music. His first symphony (1946) bears the title "War Symphony", not given by the composer. He preferred to think think of it rather as a euphoric shout of joy at living to survive the hells of war. The first movement Tempo di marcia depicts seemingly never-ending marching through Karelia during the Soviet-Finnish war. Influences from Sibelius and Shostakovich are present.American conductor Robert J. Ambrose's arrangement of Englund's Tempo di Marcia is scored for wind band. The duration is 9 minutes. While the main march theme is probably Ives' own, the march features an impressive list of quotations that includes Arkansas Traveler," Battle Cry of Freedom," British Grenadiers," The Girl I Left Behind Me," London Bridge," Marching Through Georgia," Massa's in de Cold, Cold Ground," My Old Kentucky Home," Violets," Yankee Doodle," May Day Waltz and Semper Fidelis. There is rarely anything straight-forward about the use of this material: the tunes are subjected to Ives's famous techniques ofpoly-everything. Of particular interest is Ives's use of ragtime elements to enliven this already spirited march.)

Piping Hot depicts a band marching through the streets with pipers taking the lead. Once the tune has been played, the music gets passed to the woodwinds for a musically light section. Mayhem then threatens to break out as the rest of the band gets restless and try to impose their own tunes, so the Drum Major sharply calls the band to order, and with the exception of a few outbreaks of exuberance, they successfully complete their march.

Jericho is the musical translation of the well-known story from the book of Joshua about the capture of the city of Jericho by the Israelites.Part 1 depicts the cruel journey through the desert to Canaan, the promised land. An emotional lamentation for the yearning for a home, for the end of a roaming existence.The capture of Jericho is the theme of part 2. The city cannot be captured immediately and Jehovah orders an impressive army to march around the city for six days. On the seventh day, they marched around the city seven times and the priests blew their trumpets and the people cried so loud that the walls of Jericho came tumbling down. The Jews stormed the city and drove theinhabitants away. The music clearly reveals the marching army and you can hear the walls falling down with a tremendous noise. However, there is quite some artistic freedom in the actual story.A majestic and grand melody subsequently evokes the triumphant emotions that emerged as the fortified city fell (part 3).Following a personal and romantic interpretation, the scene ultimately ends in a typical Jewish feast (part 4) whereby the virtuosity of melodies played by the woodwinds and the passionate rhythms refer to traditional Jewish music. All themes are repeated in this last part in various forms, often simultaneous and in duelling counterpoint. The piece ends with fragments from the main theme of part 1 in major: peace and quiet return at last.

Among the Coldstream Guard's duties is the famous changing of the guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace where their reputation for precision marching has led to them being described as the 'Red Machine'. The music reflects the title and heritage of this fine group; from the aggressive, machine-type music of the opening, the contrasting nostalgic French-flavoured waltz through the recapitulation and vivace finale. Listeners may hear references to music associated with the band, from Holst (the Planets) through the opening phrase of the chorale Ein Feste Burg - familiar to British Guards Bands from the troop march Huguenots.
