The American singer and actress Diana Ross was soloist with the popular female group 'The Supremes' from 1964 to 1969. With the song 'You keep me hanging on' the group was number one in the hitparade for twelve consecutive weeks. In 1970 Ross started a solo career both as singer and actress (Lady sings the Blues 1972). Many of her songs, such as Touch me in the Morning (1972), Love Hangover (1976) and Endless Love (1982) became extremely popular. The famous Dutch bandleader, composer and arranger Pi Scheffer made this splendid arrangement combining some of Ross's successful songs. This has become a Christmas song that has its roots in a love duet between the young Fleksnes and classmate Victoria. The class will be competing with a duet in a song competition. The text gives hope of love and links it to Christmas traditions. "A Dream of Christmas, About Love" is the first line of the text. "The Young Fleksnes" runned as advent calender on TV Norge in 2010. This arrangement feature an Alto Saxophone player and a euphonium / baritone / trombone player. If you should choose to use the soloist parts from the Brass band version for Flugelhorn and Euphonium, please use both parts, because some of the phrases has been changed. Please be aware of thedynamics between soloists and accompaniment. Adjust the dynamics according to the musicians in the ensemble.

It is one of the few instrumental and purely orchestral singles to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States, which it did in early 1974. Billboard ranked it as the No. 3 song for 1974. The piece was included on two albums: 1973's Under the Influence of... Love Unlimited and 1974's Rhapsody in White by Love Unlimited Orchestra.

Spartacus is a "Symphonic Tone Poem" with 3 joints. Each section has its own melodical materials, however: in the final movement the main theme from the second section returns in a 'grandioso'-tutti. The last bar but one recaptures the 'oriental' atmosphere of the very beginning. The first section (= from the beginning till J) builds up a climax by repeating and accumulating some melodical and rhythmical stuctures. The oriental character of the melodical fragments refers to the origin of the Roman slaves. The second section evokes the love between Spartacus and his loveby giving a peaceful atmosphere. The mean theme (presented the first time at letter L) has a broad andwide character and refers slightly to filmmusic. In this part of the composition, a special attention is given to the orchestration. The final section is more agressive and martial and refers to the revolt of the slaves against the Roman oppressors. In the middle of this movement, an accumulation of the 12 tones symbolizes the crucifixion of the slaves: the english horn resumes partly the cadenza of the flute (at letter J), as if he wants to show again the eternal love between Spartacus and his love a very last time ... The theme at the third bar of letter T is actually based on the 2nd theme of this section (which starts at the fifth bar of letter R), but has been worked out rhytmically.

This work is inspired on the dramatic life story of Ludwig II, former king of Bavaria. He was given the nickname Fairy Tale King because of his eccentric lifestyle, his love for medieval sagas, and the building of extravagant fantasy palaces, such as the world famous Neuschwanstein Castle. Ludwig II grew up in a strict environment but found support through his friendships, love for romantic fairytales, and the music of the German 19th century composer Richard Wagner. After Ludwig's sudden accession to the throne followed a cancelled wedding and a tragic ending, after which he became a national icon of Bavaria. The music reflects his eventful life with fairy-tale-like, romantic and dramatic sounds. Two themes from Wagner's famous opera Lohengrin form a returning homage to his tragic life story.

Strike Up the Band is a 1927 Broadway musical by George and Ira Gershwin, based on a book by George S. Kaufman. Surprisingly, the show proved to be an early failure for the talented Gershwin brothers, closing while the out-of-town tryouts were still underway. Despite this setback, it was revised in 1930 with a somewhat similar plot by Morrie Ryskind, and the show enjoyed a respectable run of 191 performances. This arrangement by James Barnes includes four of the best tunes from Strike Up the Band: Mademoiselle in New Rochelle (composed for the 1930 revival), Soon (also composed in 1930), The Man I Love, and Strike Up the Band. Curiously, The Man I Love, which is now considered to be one of the most popular George and Ira Gershwin standards, was NOT included in the 1930 run of the show.

Csar Franck, composer, pianist, organist and music teacher, completed Cupid and Psych, his sixth and last symphonic poem in 1887. It was first performed in Paris in 1888 and was a complete success, but the piece later fell completely into oblivion, and it was only thanks to some meticulous research that it has returned to concert halls. The intricate love affair between Psyche and Cupid is an original story of the Metamorphoseswritten in the 2nd century AD by Apuleius. The tale is about overcoming obstacles in love and their final union. The symphonic poem is divided into three parts and calls for a choir. The movement that is the subject of this arrangement, Psych et rosis positioned at the end of the second part.Franco Cesarini's version for wind orchestra carefully illustrates the nuances of the instrumental colours, and represents a real test aimed at demonstrating the musicality and interpretative skills of orchestras and their conductors.
