The Dance - Robert W. Smith
Inspired by the paintings of impressionist Henri Matisse and featuring the alto saxophone, "The Dance" is the first movement of "Three Conversations With Matisse." A Walk in the Park for Walter was composed for Avenllaneda's John F. Kennedy High School Band. This composition features dynamic brass, sustained chords, sweeping & energetic woodwind lines, and a recurring 3-note motif, in addition the the intuitive musical phrasing for which Strommen is known. The vibrant fast sections are contrasted by a waltz in the middle of the piece, which is then followed by a wonderfully bold ending.
