Hymn to the Sun - Satoshi Yagisawa
Commissioned by Tokai City Wind Music Band for their 40th anniversary celebration. The y gave the composer a difficult theme, that is: For 40 years we did our activity as if we were a family. We had new experiences, welcoming new members, supporting and help ing one another, sometimes having troubles. Through these experiences, the band became our Sun. With the piece, we would like to express our enthusiusm of progress, taking over the early members' will. The composer used to join in a school band, so he stron gly agreed with the theme, but composing is another hard thing to do. He decided to dr op on the band almost everytime he went to Nagoya, and promoted friendship with them, which led him copose this piece.

In 1968, With a Little Help from My Friends became his first number one hit in the UK. With this song he had his great breakthrough at the legendary Woodstock festival in 1969. For countless years the legendary Kitty O'Shea's, a bar at the Hilton & Towers Hotel in Chicago, has been the favourite meeting place for participants of the annual Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic. It was at this bar that Johan de Meij met Max McKee, from whom he eventually received a commission to write a work based on the folk music of McKee's Irish forefathers. De Meij immersed himself in the project and received unexpected help when, while purchasing an espresso machine from a neighbour, discovered the owner was Bill Whelan, composer of Riverdance.
