Battle of Hearts (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert
The source of inspiration for this work was the play Das Kathchen von Heilbronn (Katie of Heilbronn), which was written by Heinrich von Kleist in 1810. The music evokes the underlying drama, tensions and emotions of the characters involved: "The Blacksmith's Daughter", "Kunigunde", "The Fire" and "The Emperor's Daughter". The title 'Battle of Hearts' refers to the two women from the story (Kathchen and Kunigunde), who both fight to win the heart of Count Von Strahl. This is an impressive, non programmatic but strong thematic work suitable for concerts or contests. This work was commissioned by Blaserjugend Kreisverband Heilbronn.Duration: 16.30

Sanctus (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Gjeilo, Ola - Wilson, J. Eric
Ola Gjeilo, born in 1978 in Norway, moved to the United States when he was 23 years old to study composition at the Julliard School. He composed this dense and richly textured setting of the Sanctus for the Uranienborg Vokalensemble shortly after he graduated in 2006. Eric Wilson has skilfully captured the magic of the original choral work in this transcription for winds. Ola Gjeilo stated the following regarding Sanctus: It's one piece of mine that remains closest to my heart.Duration: 4:20

Spy Ring (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Saucedo, Richard L.
Under orders from General George Washington at the height of the Revolutionary War, a spy ring was organised for the purpose of providing critical information on the movement of British forces in the New York area. This dynamic work for band hints at the sense of danger and intrigue at the heart of this operation. The opening strains are propelled by an underlying rhythmic layer with flashes of colour from the winds and percussion. A reflective middle section features soloistic passages with lush harmonies, and offers a calming mood before the fast tempo returns for the dynamic finish.Duration: 7:45

Pioneers of the Medway (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Phillips, Richard
The Salvation Army Band in my home town of Chatham, part of a conurbation of 5 towns in the South East of England known as the Medway Towns, celebrated their 135th anniversary in 2016 and this piece was composed as part of those celebrations. I suppose to some degree all composers and lyricists are pioneers, always striving to write something different and new. Well, there has been a number of 'creatives' who at one time or another have been members of the Chatham Corps and this piece includes songs from some of those. The opening motif is based on the 1st 3rd and 5th notes of the scale and after a short 'fanfare-like' introduction the tune of Blacklands (Ray Steadman-Allen) is heard in 4/4 time. This is followed by a song from Ray Jones, a former Bandmaster of the Corps entitled 'On resurrection day', a song for children's voices published in 1971 and for mixed voices in 2009. Rosemary Steadman-Allen's 'To know and do thy will' is at the heart of the link into 'Everywhere', a new setting of John Gowans' words by Andrew Maycock (both former members) which is proving to be very popular at the moment. Finally, an arrangement of this composer's setting of 'Praise the Lord' is used to bring this piece to its conclusion. It was first performed on October 1st 2016 by the Chatham band under the leadership of Bandmaster Ray Maycock.
