This work is based on the 13th Century Dies Irae (Day of Wrath) attributed to Thomas von Celano. Many famous composers have already employed this originally Gregorian chant in their works, including Berlioz, Saint-Saens, Mahler and Lizst. In Jan de Haan's Song of David - the title of which is taken from the third line of the Dies Irae text - the theme is presented in unison initially and then reappears in various guises.Duration: 3.45

In the most literal sense: a piece for an occasion. The actual occasion was Jan de Haan's twentieth anniversary as a conductor of the top Dutch brass band, "Soli Deo Gloria" (Leeuwarden). To mark the occasion, the band commissioned the Belgian comopser Jan Van der Roost to create a surprise piece: without knowledge of the person being celebrated, a suitable source of inspiration was sought for. After some thought the chorale-theme from Camille Saint-Sans organ symphony was chosen, a piece with which Jan de Haan has a special bond.Apart from this chorale, Homage is also based on the names of notes taken from 'Jan de Haan' and 'Soli Deo Gloria', resulting in the tonerow: DEGAH. Both elements are combined together and form a grand climax towards the end of the piece when the whole band unites in the Saint Sans' theme.

In countries like France, Belgium and the Netherlands, 'harmony' is the name given to a symphonic wind band. Secondly, the term generally refers to a feeling of unity, which is very much present amongst band musicians, owing to the communal connection that is created when playing together. Thirdly, there is of course the harmony that you find in music itself.This 'harmonious' work opens with a festive introduction leading to a catchy pop theme. The middle movement is a lyrical ode to wind music. Then the cheerful theme returns, followed by the perfect finale as the icing on the cake.

Next, a powerful passage resounds: a reflection of the entrepreneurial spirit in Dillingen that has taken shape through the famous metal industry. Via a short clarinet solo, the work flows toward its conclusion in an emotional, stirring fashion, from nostalgic strains to full-blown euphoria.
