Together with his good friend Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst had a strong liking for the abundant folk music of the British Isles. This influence is heard in many of his works and is perhaps strongest in his Second Suite for Military Band and in the Saint Paul Suite for string orchestra. This work was composed in 1913 for the school orchestra of St. Paul's Girls School in London, where Holst was the Director of Music. The suite opens with this exuberant Jig, a dance originating from Scottish and Irish folk music in alternating duple and triple time (6/8 and 9/8), which has been expertly arranged for concert band. Capriccio - Gustav Holst
Holst composed this short, light-hearted but tuneful work in 1932, while on a visit to the USA, for Nathaniel Shilkret's concert jazz band. He was asked to use a folk tune but invented one of his own. The piece was not performed and remained in manuscript. This version for wind band was arranged by John Boyd with the approval of Imogen Holst.

Program NotesGustav Holst's orchestral suite The Planets is perhaps his best known and most popular composition. The them in the central section of the movement Jupiter was adapted by the composer himself to fit the words of the song and has subsequently found its way into use as a hymn tune under the title Thaxted (named after the Essex town where the composer lived).Ray Steadman-Allen's arrangement of the tune for brass band was published by The Salvation Army in 1998. That arrangement has now been transcribed for wind band by Brian Bowen. It can be effectively used as a stand-alone concert item or as a song accompaniment for either choir or audience.
