Cherokee Morning - Kevin Mixon
The Cherokee nation had a vibrant culture for many centuries in what is now the southeastern United States. The beginning and ending sections of this piece are based on a folk song that is commonly referred to as Cherokee Morning Song. Lanigan's Ball - Ed Kiefer
Irish music is always interesting to composers and band musicians. It fits well with a concert band and is fun to play. Ed Kiefer starts with a solo clarinet on the jig Lanigan's Ball that builds and builds to a dramatic presentation of the folk song, before leading a section of repose based on the song Binnorie. The percussion is highlighted in a build-up to the climax where the tunes are combined for a dramatic conclusion.

Composer Carl Strommen has composed these Viking-influenced melodies into a concert setting that brings out all of the history of the Scandinavian people. This fresh new setting of two traditional Scottish folk songs, Will Ye No Come Back Again and Keel Row, was written in honor of its namesake, the Scottish village Castlebay. Composer Gene Milford has crafted a well-scored offering for contest/festival performance that is reminiscent of English-style band pieces. After the striking opening, the piece moves to the more fiddle-like Keel Row in a lilting 6/8. All of the sections of the ensemble get to shine and the band will sound formidable with this piece.
