Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontyovich composed this famous Christmas Carol in 1914. The carol is based on a folk chant called Shchedryk. The composer was a supporter of the independence movement in Ukraina, and was assassinated by a Soviet agent in 1921.The carol was made famous after the adaption by Peter J. Wilhousky in 1936. Wilhousky worked as an arranger for the NBC symphony orchestra. It is also well known from popular culture, like the film Home Alone (1990), and a version by the vocal group Pentatonix.Duration: 2.30

In 1917, Ole Olsen (1850 - 1927) invited all who might have access to Norwegian folk music, to send him a copy. Olsens goal was to compose a march with local association to all regiments around the country. The result was published in 1922, as a collection of three books with 23 marches. The printing was financed by the Department of Defence and distributed to all military bands in the country. In the first book, we find "Regimental March from F?rde in Sunnfjord", which Olsen arranged after motifs sent to him by Music Instructor J. Woldsdal in Bergen. Duration: 3.30

I wrote Labyrinth to celebrate the 450th anniversary for the city of Fredrikstad. The Danish king Fredrik II agreed to establish a new town further down the river Glomma, to make it easier to defend from the Swedes. The piece is a network of quotations mixed with my own pitch material. My versions of the quoted melodies are not authentic, and sometimes hard to recognize. However, the different quotations give the music an aura of tonality. For example, a dance tune composed by the Flemish composer Mattheus Le Maistre (1505-1577). The melody also occurs in the first danish book of hymns written after the reformation. Since Norway for 400 years was a part of Denmark and everybody had to write and read Danish, they used much of the same music, too. I also use regular Danish hymn tunes and quote from a religious folk song from the area around Fredrikstad. The military signals I use are authentic (for example, The Old Danish March), and I am very sure they were used in the Old Town (the fortress) of Fredrikstad. The drums quote from The Downfall of Paris. This could have been heard played by professional soldiers hired by the Swedes from Scotland. Suite in Three MovementsThis piece of music is a commissioned work for Lavangen School band and their band music convention in 2019. The piece was performed under the mountain Spanstind (located far north in Norway) by a band consisting of approx 400 amateur musicians. The mountain Spanstind is 1457 meters high and drops into the valley Spansdalen below, an especially scenic venue.The composition is inspired by the sami joik (folk song) Ru?gu?ohkka, the song to Spanstinden. It is also inspired by the nature of the surroundings. Mvt 1 "Ro" (calmless) describes the feeling of calmness in the midnight sun. Mvt. 2 "Uro" (unrest) describes a scene of wind, snow, avalance and the big forces of nature. Mvt 3 "Storhet" (greatness) describes the feeling of greatness the nature has, and how we experience it as majestic and exalted.The piece can be played with the movements alone, or one can add the signals played by soloist(s) off-stage or in the back of the hall. The signals are to be played before, in between, and after the 3 movements. All instruments can be soloists. The soloist performs the signals rhythmically aleatoric, where each soloist repeats the signal 4 times in his or her own tempo. Signal 1 is played before Mvt 1, signal 2 is played between Mvt 1 and 2, signal 3 is played between Mvt 2 and 3, and signal 4 is played while the band holds the last note (long, use stagger breathing). after a while, all the soloists end on the same note and the music fade out.Duration: 6.30
