To The Stars! - Nigel Hess

'To the Stars!' is the fruit of a unique collaboration between Nigel Hess and the children of several Bedfordshire schools who were asked to contribute ideas for a libretto based on the themes of space travel and exploration. The work was then performed during a concert at the Royal Albert Hall showcasing the work of Bedfordshire County Music Services. The unusual combination of children's choir and symphonic wind band is wonderfully exciting, and To the Stars! provides an incomparable performing experience for both band and choir, and is also technically demanding and challenging. After a rousing introduction, we hear a countdown to our rocket's 'blast off', and suddenly we are heading out to the planets where we meet aliens with blue eyes and pink ears! After a brief but terrifying skirmish with a black hole we head off to a 'world of many wonders', and as we leave our solar system behind, the piece finishes with a spectacular shout of 'Fly with us - to the stars!'.

The trip takes us first into Arabia, where the flutes are smuggling us via the Silk Road into China. The saxophones take care of a typically Jewish klezmer sound. In part three - Yes We Can (The American Dream) -we fly to the swinging United States. Before returning home, we quickly go 'Down Under'.

Delicate percussion helps to accentuate the emotional moments while developing those players' expressive abilities. A brief faster section contrasts with the initial lyrical theme before a return to the soaring, bird-like moments from the beginning. A moving and beautiful tribute to friends everywhere, this ballad is a great reflective moment for any concert or contest.

    Resurrection - Kevin Houben

"Man wird mit Keulen zu Boden geschlagen und dann auf Engelsfittichen zu den hchsten Hhen gehoben." (Mahler over zijn 2de symfonie "Wederopstanding", Juli 1894)*"You are clubbed to the ground and then lifted to the highest heights on angels' wings"Commissioned by and dedicated to Concertband Maasmechelen (BE), conducted by Mark Prils.Kevin Houben was inspired for this work by Gustav Mahler's 2nd symphony, better known as the Resurrection symphony. The work can be regarded as a Ma(h)lerei of various compositional and spherical elements that refer to the Austrian composer but that appear in this composition in an embedded, contemporary way.As Mahler often drew his inspiration from nature, the opening of this piece brings nature right to the audience. The work starts with a solo for alto flute accompanied by a pedal note in four octaves with harmonic responses echoing the solo. From the start, Kevin Houben provides Mahler's material with a contemporary touch. He replaces the nature sounds that Mahler uses (perfect fourth) with tritone intervals. The off stage trumpet signals have been preserved but are provided with a new accompaniment. Gradually, throughout the work, the orchestra undergoes its own independent development. Mahler's musical signature remains recognizable, but Kevin Houben allows it - e.g. through the use of various timbres - to flourish in a more modern musical idiom, which characterizes numerous contemporary compositions for wind band (cfr. Where Angels Fly). The work comes to a grandiose end with a passage of the famous chorale from Mahler's 2nd symphony. The rich orchestration of this chorale gives the listener the illusion of the presence of a choir and organ without actually using them.In Resurrection, each instrument group comes into its own: in solo fragments, in transparent thematic passages or in splendid tuttis. Therefore, the work forms an interesting challenge for a wind band on several levels, both technically and melodically - the latter due to the long suspenseful melodic phrases that the musical structure requires. The piece is accessible to a wide audience and can be regarded as an enrichment for any concert programme. Resurrection takes the audience through various atmospheres and experiences: from stunning to chilling, from calming to delighting...Die Musik muss immer ein Sehnen enthalten, ein Sehnen ber die Dinge dieser Welt hinaus." (Gustav Mahler, 1860-1911)"Music must always involve a longing, a yearning beyond the things of this world."

Up in the Sky - Otto M. Schwarz

One of man's great dreams has always been to fly high through the air like a bird, free as a bird. There are ancient Greek legends such of those of Daedalus and Icarus, and indeed as early as the 9th century attempts at flight are reputed to have taken place in Arabia. It wasn't until 1783, however, that the invention of hot air ballooning by the Montgolfier brothers in France propelled man through the air for the first time. This colourful work depicts every step of this adventurous ballooning story.

Spirit of the Winds - Robert W. Smith

Spirit of the Winds, a concert/festival work for the developing band, was inspired by the beautiful Temecula Valley of California. Each year, the sky over the valley is filled with hot air balloons creating a visual sight that is not soon forgotten. Of course, balloons are unable to "steer" and must fly with the gentle breezes of the air current. As a result, those subject to the "spirit of the winds" can find themselves over festival grounds or floating above the beautiful Temecula Valley vineyards. Beginning with a bold, yet mysterious statement, the introduction gives way to a soaring melody as our flight begins. Cascading figures in the woodwinds create the effect of wind currents followed by a beautiful secondary melodic statement. The original theme returns leading to a very energetic conclusion. Accessible to a wide range of concert bands, Spirit of the Winds provides multiple teaching opportunities and will be enjoyed by both performer and audience.
