Kare Grottum is known to most as a pianist and producer by NRK. He was involved in numerous TV productions, both as producer, musician, composer, and arranger. This tune is taken from a CD released in 1992, Fra en musikers dagbok where he brings with him several Norwegian soloists of international class. It is Erling Wicklund who does a brilliant solo on Flugabone which has also used as a starting point for the written improvisation. The arrangement should be played in a slightly swinging way, but not as much as a jazz waltz. Play with the straight eighths and then let it flow, with a faint two against three feeling, which clearly shows up in some places. This well know Christmas Carol has a French tune from the 16th century dance book Orch?sographie, written by Jehan Tabourot. The original title is "Le branle de l'Official". The lyrics were written by Englishman George Ratcliffe Woodward in 1924. Woodward took an interest in church bell ringing, which is easy to hear in his lyrics, and the arrangement also tries to portray this. The song is unusual in that the verse is sung in an old-style English, while the chorus is in latin, with it's signature melisma on the word "Gloria". There are few instrumental pieces amongst the works of Peter Warlock who wrote chiefly vocal items. Several of his carols have become firmly established in the seasonal repertoire of singers and choirs; none moreso than Bethlehem Down. The string version by Philip Lane stretches the original four verses to five and seeks to make the piece as effective for strings as it is for choirs. No harmonic changes have been made although the voicing has naturally been varied for textural reasons. This adaptation by Paul Noble has added to the variance in instrumental textures to fully realize the tonal colours of the Concert Band. With key signatures of F/d minor, Bb/g minor, Eb/c minor, and Ab/f minor, numerous suspensions, and softer to louder dynamics, this chorale is a perfect warm-up and tune-up piece for the ensemble, while at the same time exploring worthwhile and programmable concert repertoire.

Fletcher was a prolific composer and wrote a large number of suites for light orchestra as well as military band marches The Crown of Chivalry, Spirit of Pageantry, V.C. March, and a Sultan's March, extracted from his musical 'Cairo In 1909 the Worshipful Company of Musicians in London, England offered 5 prizes for original military band compositions. This competition attracted the attention of some fine British composers. Holst's 'Suite in Eb' was placed 3rd and this Grand March, ' The Spirit of Pageantry' was awarded 2nd prize. The winning composer was B,Walton O'Donnell, who later became an outstanding Musical Director of the BBC Wireless Military Band. The Spirit of Pageantry is a wonderful evocation of Edwardian England and deserves to be reinstated into the Concert Band repertory
