Premiere Symphonie des Noels - Michel-Richard Delalande

The French composer and organist Michel Richard de Lalande (Paris, 1657 - Versailles, 1726), a contemporary of Jean-Baptiste Lully, was music teacher of the daughters of King Louis XIV and was appointed Court Composer and conductor (Matre et compositeur de la chapelle royale, surintendant et compositeur de la musique de la chambre). His music was a harmonious synthesis of the French and Italian styles. He mainly composed ballet and religious music (numerous motets), as well as some famous orchestral pieces such as the famous 'Symphonies pour les Soupers du Roi' and the four Symphonies de Nols (Christmas symphonies). The latter are orchestrations of traditional French Carols sung at Christmas Eve in the chapel of the castle at Versailles. Dsir Dondeyne, conductor of the Paris Metropolitan Police Band (Musique de Gardiens de la Paix) from 1954 to 1979, wrote this fine arrangement for symphonic band.

    Cobra - Jan Bosveld

Shortly after the Second World War, a combative movement of Danish, Belgian and Dutch artists chose the cobra snake - extremely dangerous yet considered sacred - as a symbol of their resistance to strict guideliness of form. The name "Cobra" also happens to contain the first letters of the cities Copenhagen, Brussels ans Amsterdam, from where most of the movement's members came. The Cobra movement, which existed from November 1948 until November 1951, can with some justicication be called the last major avant-garde movement of the 20th century. The source of inspiration for the composition Cobra comes from four paintings: "Obhobning" by the Dane Egill Jacobsen; "La jeune fille et lamort" by the Belgian Pierre Alechinsky; "Orgeldraaier" and "Le rythme joyeux de la ville" by the Dutch artists Karel Appel and Corneille. Obhobning means "pile-up", which is represented musically in the first part by a melodic and harmonic pilling up of perfect fourth's. The first part is also characterized by a rhythmic feeling, which the painting gives through its use of numerous black stripes. In the painting La jeune fille et la mort, Pierre Alechinsky places a young girl opposite Death. The second part features the constantly pulsating motion of live while a creeping, dark, melodic line develops. The tension between life and death is tangible as a battle reveals itself. In part three, one hears the Orgeldraaier by Karel Appel, as cheerful and playful as an organ grinder's music. The painting Le rythme joyeux de la ville by Corneille is busy and extremely dynamic, a perfect source of inspiration for a powerful, rhythmic ending to this composition.

Omnia for Concert Band - Ingebjørg Vilhelmsen

Omnia mutantur, nos et mutamur in illisThis piece for concert band was commisioned by Lilleaker Skoles Musikkorps, and conductor Tomas Austestad. A big thank you to Austestad for invaluable encouragement and guidance during the process.OMNIA was commissioned and written in 2021, during the global pandemic. The piece describes being able to seek refuge in music. The process started by writing a chorale for Lilleaker, which further developed into a larger contect piece based on this chorale. The musicians are challenged through contrasting sound expressions, technically demanding passages and lyrical virtuosity. During the piece, several variations are introduced, before the chorale is fully presented in the piece's magnificent conclusion.

    Cavatina - Charles Gounod

Goethe's Faust has already been set to music by various renowned musicians, such as Berlioz, Busoni and Spohr, and indeed Charles Gounod, who built his eponymous opera around the tale. Gounod's Faust is primarily known for its lovely melodies and its beautifully expressive vocal parts and subtle orchestrations. One of the high points of this opera is doubtless this impressive Cavatina ("Salut, demeure chaste et pure"). Wil van der Beek has arranged the Cavatina with the euphonium as solo instrument.

    Imani - Sean O'Loughlin

Imani, which means faith, is the seventh day of Kwanzaa, the African and African-American celebration of family and culture. This challenging and colorful piece rises from its quiet chant-like opening (involving part of the band singing the "Imani" tune) to a sonorous major climax at measure 51. The faster section that follows makes brilliant use of an enlarged percussion section that includes a number of ethnic instruments (Log drums, Congas, Claves, et. al.) This is a terrific multicultural selection that will have many uses for holiday programs and contest performances. Duration: 6'

    Suite Acadienne - Bernhard Bogisch

    1. La belle Franoise. This song tells the story of the beautiful Franoise, who is visited by her lover on the eve of his departure. She helps him prepare for his voyage and they talk for the last time at the foot of a rock, which has been their trysting place. The next day, when he has left the harbour, he hears the sound of a bell. It is the bell that tolls for Franoise, who is being carried to her grave.2. Le Prince Eugne. At least two versions of this song are in existence, both of which are represented here. It tells of the prince Eugne, who, on his way to Paris, encounters twenty of his worst enemies. He manages to kill fourteen of them before his sword breaks. He then asks his page to get him another sword, but the lad is too afraid for his own life. This being the case the prince tells him to tell his wife to take care of his son, who 'will have his revenge by lighting a candle in Paris'.3. Pinson et Cendrouille. This song deals with the marriage of two not further specified animals, who have nothing with which to prepare a wedding feast, and need help from the other animals. But when the rat comes in carrying a fiddle, he is chased away.4. Le Dpart de l'Amant. At least two versions of this song are known, both of which are represented here. It is one of many songs dealing with departure, and is of Canadian origin. The lover is warned of the charms of the pretty 'canadiennes' which among Acadiens refers to French Canadians from Qubec. 'Be true to me save your heart. When I return from my voyage I will make you happy'.5. Le Remde son Talon. This, like many children's/folk songs is a bit of a nonsense song. Marguerite has trouble with the heel of her shoe, and asks her mother for help. Mom suggests various things, such as an onion (too round), a tomato (too flat) etc. In the end it turns out that a bachelor is her best bet.
