Celestial - Ryan Meeboer
The term celestial has many different meanings: relating to the sky, space, the heavens, or just something simply that is really good. All of these things can be used to describe what is brought out by the performance of this piece. This theme goes through a number of transformations throughout the piece and gives the performers the opportunity to work on many elements and styles of performing, from light dynamics and articulations, into something that is meant to be played with more energy and heaviness. Written by Ryan Meeboer for concert band.

Modal Miniatures - Paul W. Whear
MODAL MINIATURES is a suite of three short movements of different moods written in the Phrygian mode instead of the traditional major or minor scale. Each movement is based on the chorale-like melody of the first movement. The second movement is a variation of this melody, and the third movement uses the theme in inversion as an ostinato. Dr. Whear wrote MODAL MINIATURES especially for the younger bands so they may experience playing a contemporary work with an authentic scoring in the modal style.

A World Away - Ryan Meeboer and David Marlatt
This piece contains two distinctively different themes---a traditional European folk song sounding melody and a Japanese inspired one. Each melody is introduced on its own, then they are combined---with both themes playing simultaneously! This creates a very effective and beautiful sonority. This piece was written to celebrate the twinning of two cities---one in Canada and the other in Japan. (2:25)
