The inspiration for this three-part work goes back to the International European Youth Wind Music Festival, of which the patron has been Jacob de Haan several times. It begins in a festive march tempo, then sacred music, instrumental groups playing off_x005F_x001E_stage and a little march for brass and _x005F_x001D_flutes. The third movement is a parade in which the various sections of the ensemble head towards the stage from different directions. Even without the effective choreography of the musicians, Call of the Valley is an impressive concert band composition.

Odilia is an up-tempo and joyful ode to Baume-les-Dames, a village in the department of Doubs in Franche-Comt, Eastern France.The title is derived from the legend of Odilia of Alsace (venerated as Saint Odilia, or Odile), the daughter of the Duke of Alsace. She was born blind, and literally saw the light at the age of twelve at the convent of Baume-les-Dames. From this miraculous occurrence, she was dubbed Odilia -- child of light.Jacob de Haan was inspired by medieval dance music for the opening of this composition. In the slow movement that follows, a lyrical minor theme builds to a dramatic climax, which is followed by a calm passage featuring the repeatedlyrical theme. Finally, the medieval motif returns, this time presented in a festive gospel version.

Remembrance Day (Totengedenken) is a chorale-like piece in memory of those who have died in service. Jacob de Haan composed this work for a concert by the symphonic wind orchestra Symphonic Winds, which he conducted in Germany on Volkstrauertag (national remembrance day). The composition is based on a text from Totengedenken (Commemoration of Those Who Have Died). This narrative text is provided in four languages, and is intended to be spoken (using a microphone) ad libitum during the performance. Choir parts are also available to complement the performance.

The town of Zevenhuizen (Seven Houses) in the Dutch province of Groningen conceived the idea to assemble 777 musicians for an experimental open air concert. Within that context, Jacob de Haan was commissioned to write a special composition for the local music society Concordia on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary. The full number of musicians could not be realised entirely, but the performance was a great happening nonetheless. Now, the music has been published in a compilation, with the most appealing melodies in a varying style of rock music and ballads. Concertante Variations on an original theme after Pyotr Ilyich TchaikovskyJan de Haan drew inspiration for this work from five paintings exhibited in The Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, one of the largest and most versatile museums in the world. He used the melodious Andante cantabile from the String Quartet Op. 11 by the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky as its starting point.
