The forerunner of the Bottle Dance was written for the Blue Danube Harmonica Band in the early 1960s. Later, at the instigation of the excellent folk dance choreographer Mikls Manninger, an arrangement for wind band was prepared, in order to widen the ensemble's repertoire of German national pieces by the addition of a Hungarian dance. The production scored a resounding success not only with the audience but also with the musicians who performed in it, with the result that before long the composer prepared from the Bottle Dance an independent work for wind ensemble - a showy piece, virtuosic in its effect yet easily playable. The youth orchestra arrangement is a simplified andshortened version of the work for full-scale orchestra.

Dance of the SatyrsOne of my favourite Shakespeare plays is The Winter's Tale, and I have written music for three completely different productions during my time as Head of Music to the Royal Shakespeare Company. One, starring Judi Dench as both the mother, Hermione and her daughter, Perdita, had a big band Tribal Love-Rock score; another had a more classical, but timeless feel to it, and the last was an excellent small-scale touring production, for which I was allowed only a handful of instruments. It is from this source that the basic themes for Bohemian Dances, and an earlier version Three Dances for Clarinet Choir, have emerged. Act IV of the play is set in the kingdom of Bohemia - hence the title of the work.Shakespeare calls for "A Dance of Shepherds and Shepherdesses", which gives Florizel, the son of Polixenes, (King of Bohemia) a chance to become better acquainted with the beautiful Perdita, the lost daughter of Leontes, (King of Sicilia). This movement is written in seemingly tricky and ever-changing metres, but is rhythmically quite logical and melodically catchy.The slower second movement 'Florizel and Perdita' is the lovers' pas de deux: a gentle, slow waltz-like tune, initially presented by the principal oboe, is contrasted with a lndler-like double time melody, at the end of which a solo clarinet makes a link to the last movement.'Dance of the Satyrs' is a rip-roaring, foot-stamping dance performed in the play by 'three carters, three shepherds, three neat-herds, and three swine-herds', who enter in outrageous costumes representing the lecherous half-man, half-goat of Greek mythology. The six dances move forward historically from the ancient Hey, through Waltz and Polka, to the sophisticated Tango and the jazz tradition. The rhythm that typifies each dance is constantly under attack, sometimes from a different dance style altogether. These intrusive elements are most obvious in the final dance and prompts the double meaning of the title.I. HEYHey is constructed like a mediaeval motet, where the main blocks of material are rhythmically unconnected to one another. The percussion is the most disconnected of all and seems to have arrived from a Chinese carnival. The scoring alludes to the eight, four and two foot pipes of a baroque organ.I. PAVANE/WALTZAfter a nod in the direction of Dowland's Lachrimae Pavan, the piece seems to wander to and fro between the 16th century and the 19th century world of the Lehr waltz.I. POLKAThe Polka is derived from a four bar fragment found in Stravinsky's sketchbook for The Rite of Spring above which is written: "Dieppe Polka".I. WALTZ/GALLIARDThis is a reversal of the date-shift process in the second movement, in that the wandering goes backwards rather than forwards, particularly to the William Byrd of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book.I. TANGOSA slow sentimental tango is sandwiched between an abstract deconstructed one, both of which are developed in Dominic Muldowney's opera The Voluptuous Tango.I. BREAK-DANCEBreak-Dance is the fastest, hardest and strangest movement. Its exuberance fractures the texture, which slowly crumbles midway through the movement, only to be resurrected mirror fashion. The piece is a species of palindrome with no true centre, hence: "Break-Dance".Conductors are free to make a selection from these dances for festival or competition programmes, when limited performance time is available.

Dance of the Whale was commissioned by the Spanish music foundation, Musica et Orbi, at the instigation of its president, Frank De Vuyst. It is part of a unique project which involved nine composers each writing a short movement, describing an animal of the composers' choice, to form a suite called Bestiarium. A consortium of bands around the world helped to fund the project and the world premiere of the suite took place in March 2013 in Medellin, Colombia. Dance of the Whale uses the tenor instruments of the band to describe a lazy and graceful dance by a blue whale and is dedicated to endangered species around the world.Duration: 4:45
