Salvation - Robert W. Smith
The Russian hymn "Salvation Is Created" was composed by Peter Tchesnokov in 1912. Transcribed many times over the century, it has become a standard in the repertoire for choir, orchestra and band. Composer Robert W. Smith has used this timeless melody to create a new interpretive statement for the concert band. From the soft and delicate opening phrases to the contrasting full band response, the piece progresses through multiple variations and treatments. The final section of the work presents the hymn in a more standard setting leading to a powerful conclusion. Callisto
A winning and moderately easy concert piece that takes its name from one of the moons of Jupiter, Callisto is a vibrantly scored set of two variations on a fragment of a theme from the Jupiter movement of Gustav Holst's orchestral suite, The Planets. The characteristic flatted-7th of much English folk music is retained in both the quick opening section and the slow, reflective variation that forms the B section of this clever and appealing overture-style piece.

After Mozart
Lszl Dubrovay's work, written in 2006, on the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, is a salute of a 21st-century composer to one of the greatest geniuses in the history of music. The composer builds his original ideas on one of the best-known melodies of The Marriage of Figaro (Figaro's aria: ''Non pi? andrai, farfallone amoroso''). The series of variations on the theme of the aria is created by the involvement of special instruments, and by fully harnessing their technical abilities, while Dubrovay's hallmark of a perfect balance and peculiar compositional tone is realised on an exceptionally large orchestra. The work is suited to illustrate the potentials of crossovers between different periods in the history of music, but it can also be played at a festive, thematic concert.
