Franz von Suppe was born Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo Cavaliere di Suppe-Demielli on April 18, 1819. His father and grandfather were both civil servants, and he was distant relative of Gaetano Donizetti. He displayed his talent at an early age when he began to compose music as a young boy, but despite this he received no encouragement from his father to pursue a career in music. He went on to compose many operas, most of which remain relatively obscure; however, the overtures to "Poet and Peasant" and "Light Cavalry" are well known and have been quite popular in transcriptions for concert band and widely used in movies and cartoons. Highly exuberant and spirited, Vienna Jubilation Overture contains all the thrilling elements that are evident in all of von Suppes remarkable overtures.

A game of chess took place in London between two great masters, Anderssen (English) and Kiesevitzki (Russian). That game was regarded as one of the most beautiful ever played in history. That was the reason why it was christened with the name of 'The Immortal One'. In that game, Anderssen sacrificed important pieces, such as the Queen, to achieve the spectacular checkmate. What would happen if that game got humanised in our imagination through the work of music? Great castles, cavalry, pawns as warriors divided into two Kingdoms that fight to get independent. At the start, the fighting troops fall in at a great open area to defend their fortresses and castles (introduction). The brasswind and drums calls work the start of the battle... Meanwhile, a great calm reigns in the castle foreboding the mighty outcome. The king and queen, unaware of the war, are dancing in the mirrors room but they are interrupted after the warning given about a new attack. Courage and sacrifice are reflected in the image of the queen, who finally sacrifices her life to save her people. She fights with all her strength but falls dead at the battlefield. The king, in revenge, gathers all his men and comes out to fight the cruel, bloody, final battle. The final apotheosis represents the songs of praise for the fallen at the battle.

Based on Hayao Miyazaki's animation "Howl's Moving Castle" (2004), this Symphonic Fantasy for Band was arranged for Neagari Jr. High School Band (Kazuhiro Tanaka- director) in Nomi, Ishikawa, Japan as concert contest non-test repertoire.This work consists of 5 scenes which are freely adapted from Image Symphonic Suite (music released before the film's premier) and The Soundtrack:1. Cav Party was commissioned by The Band of the Household Cavalry in 2020. The idea was to showcase the various musical elements of the band in a party piece that gets more boisterous as it goes on. It utilises three Eighteenth century melodies associated with the band, starting off with a folkish setting of Handel's March from Scipio for harp, violin, flute and cor anglais (all fully cued on regular wind band instruments) and then into Keel Row where the accordion is featured before the whole band enters, and finally to Money Musk. Both Keel Row and Money Musk are played as Trot Marches by the band.The regimental slow march Scipio comes from Handel's opera of 1725 The Mercy of Scipio, which was based on the life of the Roman General Scipio Africanus.Keel Row is a traditional folk song evoking the life and work of the keelmen of Newcastle upon Tyne. It was first published in 1770, although it could be considerably older. The opening lines of the song describe Sandgate, the part of the quayside overlooking the River Tyne to the east of the city centre where the keelmen lived.Money Musk, also known as Monymusk or Monnymusk was originally a pipe tune composed by Scottish fiddler Daniel (sometimes Donald) Dow (1732 - 1783) in 1776. It takes its name from a baronial estate in Aberdeenshire, Scotland called Monymusk House. The tune first appeared in Dow's Thirty Seven New Reels, c. 1780 under the title Sir Archibald Grant of Monemusk's Reel.Duration: 3.45

Concretely, this means that this flex version, following the opening fanfare, can be played along with the first movement (bars 9-52). This piece is about the resurrection of these bands following a political decision in favour of the renowned military music organisation structure in Austria. 'The Rise of the Phoenix' is an impressive piece, full of bright, colourful melodies and an incredible positive ambience. There is a beautiful slow middle section with a touch of romance, leading to a spectacular maestoso finale in which you can hear a hint of a famous military signal (as also used in Von Supp's 'Light Cavalry Overture').
