£104.99Variations on Shalom Chaverim - Andreas Ludwig Schulte
Shalom Chaverim is an ancient Hebrew (farewell)song, which was originally sung at the end of a celebration or meeting. It was and is mostly sung as a round. Freely translated the words mean "Goodbye, friends, goodbye and see you again!". The varying moods at a parting have been captured very well by Andreas Schulte in his arrangement 'Variations on Shalom Chaverim'. The composer himself says about the song, 'Although the melody is in a minor key, the overall atmosphere in the song is positive. one wishes each other all the best. Saying goodbye, however, also hurts. When you slow down the pace of the melody and add 'blue notes' in the harmonies, this can be sensed immediately.'Schulte refers here to the first variation. The second variation is very intense with possibly even deeper-felt emotions. 'Variations on Shalom Chaverim' ends on a cheerful and positive note, in fast tempo, and with oriental elements in the melody: 'L'hitra'ot, Shalom' (See you again, and farewell!).

The commission was supported by The Composers' Remuneration Fund.With the title "Fanfares and Fantasies", I try to accommodate both the extroverted (represented by fanfares and celebration), with the quiet and introverted in the small interludes I call fantasies.The solitary flute in the fantasies symbolizes something that is very far from brass fanfares, but still, I believe that by this, both the band and the music emerge with even greater depth. Ugo Papurello, president of the ''I Filarmonici'' band from San Carlo Canavese (Turin), commissioned this piece to celebrate the group's twentieth anniversary. The opening fanfare is an eloquent and fitting introduction to a solemn celebration. It is followed by the allegro, which has a modal feel and is characterised by a succession of rhythms representing the liveliness ad enthusiasm that have always characterised this band. The andante symbolises a moment of reflection and nostalgic reminiscence. The allegro is repeated as an expression of the hope that the band will continue to set itself increasingly ambitious goals. The fanfare brings back the joyous atmosphere of this special occasion and sets a formal seal on the band's twentieth anniversary.

£280.50Of Strife (1. From A Time Of Strife) - Eric Ewazen
A commission by the U.S. Air Force Band of the West allowed Ewazen to consider the ten years following the events of 9/11/2001, resulting in A Time of Strife, a Time of Peace. The first movement considers the long wars and the losses entailed through soaring lyrical lines above a rhythmic, pounding accompaniment, as Ewazen puts it. The second movement is a bittersweet celebration on the death of the perpetrator and a future of joy, peace, and life. Ewazen says, A burst of joyous energy bringing this chapter in our history to a close.
