December was inspired by the holiday season in Canada. It reflects the sounds, the sights, and the moods of that magical time of year. December starts off joyfully with a playful theme of celebration. This leads into an icy, reverent, winter solstice theme. Then there is a further development of the original joyful theme and a jubilant build to the finish. December can be performed with or without the optional choir part. An Olympic Celebration - Robert Buckley
An Olympic Celebration is a tribute to the pursuit of excellence and the triumph of the human spirit. This piece was commissioned by The West Vancouver Youth Band for the build up to the 2010 Winter Olympics. The initial "festive fanfare", based on open fifths moving in contrary motion, brings the athletes out into the arena. This leads to the "parade of the athletes" theme. Then comes the establishment of the "heroic theme" in the woodwinds and horns - moving through different sections - until the transition, with an alto saxophone solo and an oboe solo, leading into the "flashback" section. Here we go into the minds of the athletes and the internal and physical struggles thathave brought them to this place. The melody is epic; rich in feeling and full of heart. This moves through various moods until the introduction of the "challenge" theme; a theme stated by the horns and trombones, which passes through the different sections of the band. A restatement of the "flashback" theme, this time triumphant, takes us to a final fanfare of celebration and jubilation.

Free Running is an exciting, high velocity tour-de-force that will keep both musicians and the audience on the edge of their seats. Inspiration for the work came from the pointillistic paintings of Seurat (who created images by using tiny spots of primary colors on his canvas) and from Parkour, a form of urban acrobatics in which participants, known as free runners, use the structures of the rural landscape to perform catlike leaps and sprints. The resulting creation is a non-stop piece of music made up of only staccato notes in a constant rhythm moving through different sections of the ensemble. Free Running was commissioned by the Troy University Symphony Band for the 2011Alabama Music Educators Association Convention. The annual Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race between the Alaskan cities of Anchorage and Nome covers 1,049 challenging miles of jagged mountain ranges, dense forests and windswept coastlines. This amazing feat of endurance was theinspiration for Iditarod. In cinematic fashion, the point of view cuts from long-shots to close-ups (from the dog's view to the eagle's), constantly moving forward with a relentless pulse. With a brief respite, a majestic,sweeping theme is introduced and develops. And then - back to the race! With renewed energy, the dogs race the final stretch: the music building and intensifying to the very end.
