Sentinel Blue is styled in the manner of the British 'slow march.' The main theme is legato and rich, with long phrasing the key to achieving a successful performance. A forceful transition introduces a repeat of the main theme by the full band. A secondary theme, scored in block harmony, is introduced by a fanfare-like interlude played by cornets. It then modulates back to the main melody in a 'grandioso' style. (Grade 3)

Donald Hunsberger has scored this edition for 23 players which produces a leaner and more muscular version to serve as a companion to Thomas Verrier's setting for full concert band or wind ensemble.
