Entrance of the Shogun - David Marlatt
In ancient Japan, the shogun were the military commanders appointed by the emperor. Grand and regal, when a shogun appeared to the public, there was a sense of awe and power at this warrior leader. Flanked by armies of samurai warriors, their power was obvious and their respect was demanded. This clever piece for very young band uses only the 5 notes used in a pentatonic scale (like playing just the black keys on the piano). This gives this beginning band piece a true Asian sonority. La Forza Scura (The Dark Force) - Kevin Kaisershot
La Forza Scura is a follow-up to an overture I wrote a number of years ago entitled Black Tower Overture. Those familiar with that work will at once notice the similarities. La Forza Scura however, was designed to be accessible to less experienced bands while still retaining the sinister undertone of its big brother. Once again the sounds portraying rugged landscapes and fierce battles are found in the Allegro portions of the piece while the sounds of despair and yet glimmers of hope are found in the Andante. In any event, it is a "FORCE" to be reckoned with.

Earthscape - David Marlatt
is a lyrical piece inspired by the view of our planet from space. In the silent, black vacuum of space exists this bright blue planet, slowly rotating, giving astronauts a serene and breathtaking view of the only source of life in our solar system. This work features the band in a peaceful mood and offers the opportunity for some soloistic playing by a flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, and baritone.

Echoes of Christmas - Dave Black
combines two Christmas favorites, "While by My Sheep" (Or "The Echo Carol") and "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen." "The Echo Carol," so named because it is written in a call and response format, is presented here with initial statement by the brass which are then immediately echoed by the woodwinds. "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" features a canonic treatment of this holiday favorite, first in the flutes and clarinets and then the entire ensemble. Your audience will be echoing these Christmas carols long after your next holiday concert is over!
