Rondeau From Abdelazer (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Purcell, Henry - Farnon, David

Abdelazer?was a 17th century masque - a blend of poetry, dance, and instrumental music especially popular at the court of James I of England. Purcell wrote the music in 1695. This rondeau is a short dance in the masque which would probably have been forgotten had not Benjamin Britten made it popular when he used it as the theme for his "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra."

JOHN GAY SUITE (Novello Symphonic Band) Extra Score - Orr, Buxton

Extra score only. The idea for this suite came from left-over thoughts from a projected version of The Beggar's Opera, which failed to come to fruition. When John Gay assembles the music for The Beggar's Opera in 1727, he used popular tunes of the day and Dr. Pepusch provided orchestral accompaniments. More recently, Frederic Austin and Benjamin Britten have been amongst many composers who have adapted these melodies to their own purposes. Duration: 15 mins. Recorded on QPRM127D Great British Music for Wind Band Vol.4 (Guildhall Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Peter Gane)

Theme and Fugue (from The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Britten, Benjamin - Saucedo, Richard L.

Originally composed to introduce the various instruments of the orchestra, Britten's "Young Person's Guide" follows a set of variations based on a melody by Henry Purcell. In this setting for wind band, Richard Saucedo presents the opening theme followed by Britten's exuberant fugue which culminates in a glorious finale and recap of Purcell's melody. A stunning work for mature ensembles. Duration. 4:40
