Ritmico is a dynamic contest style overture that joins florid melodic writing with a pulsing percussion and driving bass lines. Cast in ABA form, the main vivace theme gives way to a lyrical cantabile middle section, eventually leading towards a recapitulation of the main theme. In this final section, the melody and accompaniment figures return with an energetic counterpoint woven in, building towards an exciting and dramatic finish to the piece. Italian Wedding Song is a lyrical, very romantic song in G minor, reminiscent in some ways of the music of Puccini and Verdi. Like Barnes' Yorkshire Ballad, it is a brief, solemn work, perfect for teaching students to play in an emotional, legato style. If you have a good Euphonium player, this work is a must; it is an excellent choice for a moment of touching repose on your next concert. Italian Wedding Song is carefully scored and cross-cued, and the ranges are very reasonable for all instruments.

The Four Winds by Evan Hause for Concert Band. The Four Winds is an homage by the composer to some of the well-known band composers, such as Clifton Williams and John Barnes Chance, as well as earlier wind masters like Holst and Mahler. Evan Hause was a student of William Bolcom, and his more advanced band work, Tango Variations, has been performed and recorded by some of the top university ensembles. This fantasy-overture is appropriate for the intermediate high school band, contrasting brisk fanfare music with variations on a Romantic theme. (Grade 4) Dur: 6:00.
