Overture for Symphonic Band - Bin Kaneda
Overture for Symphonic Band was composed in 1970 by Bin Kaneda at the request of the Yamaha Concert Band. This music was first performed by the Yamaha Concert Band at their regular spring concert in 1971 in Tokyo. The Overture is comprised of two movements - Andante and Allegro. The idea for the theme of the Allegro came to the composer during a Fall festival of the village in Shikoku Island, along the coast of the Inland Sea where he spent two years of his childhood. The Yamaha Concert Band won the Gold Medal award with the performance of this music at the All Japan Band Concert in the Fall of 1971.

Warlock - Kevin Kaisershot
provides ultimate flexibility for ensembles with incomplete instrumentation or odd combinations. These pieces are playable by as few as 5 woodwind, brass, or string players with or without percussion. This creates the opportunity for a mixed quintet to perform these titles but also allows for performance for 10-15 players up to full a band/orchestra with parts doubling. Great for music camps, contest use or any band room that has non-standard instrumentation. A warlock is a male who practices witchcraft. This little tonal caricature by Kevin Kaisershot seeks to musically portray this enigmatic character in a somewhat less than frightening way. The tritone and its usage in the Middle Ages was forbidden, but today has become more associated with its rather "devious" sound and pops up every so often in music of that nature. The opening is that of the shroud of mystery surrounding the character. The main body of the piece is the swirling cone of energy that the character possesses, and the waltz section is a dance related section containing a bit of devious comic relief.

Blue Lake and Rocky Shore - Bill Thomas
provides ultimate flexibility for ensembles with incomplete instrumentation or odd combinations. Based on the Canadian folk song "Land of the Silver Birch," is meant to serve as an introduction to minimalist music for younger ensembles. With its nod to the work of John Adams and Eric Whitacre, this composition can act as a gateway to a further study of minimalism and serve as an exciting opening or closing work to any concert.
