This work for band is a setting of several delightful Moravian folk dances. "Stoji hruska v oudoli" is a fast-paced two-step dance. "Rozluc se Ancicko" features a clarinet solo in a mournful, yet lilting, slow 6/8 melody. "Preskoda nastokrat" is a highly rhythmic piece in a moderate tempo that features a brief double reed/piccolo section. "Ma zlata maticka" begins with an unaccompanied alto saxophone solo, then includes a folk dance that begins slowly and increases in tempo. "Vojaci jedou" is a proud and uplifting march in 3/4 time. "U Kltera pole" ends the rhapsody with a lively 2/4 dance that builds to a rousing conclusion. This three movement work by the world renowned composer Philip Sparke is based on traditional folk songs, in particular popular children's songs, from Singapore.The first movement is based on Gelang Sipaku Gelang, a well-loved folksong which has become associated with the Geylang area and is a song about community spirit and people living together in harmony. The slower second movement uses Di-Tanjung Katong, a song which is popular with childrens' choirs and third the movement uses two traditional melodies - Lenggang Kangkung which tells of the graceful swaying of watercress in the rice paddy fields and Munnaeru Vaalibaa. Out of the Darkness, Into the Light is about optimism. All of us experience disappointments in our lives, such failed relationships or the loss of loved ones, but the indomitably of the human spirit allows us to overcome such set backs and get through the darker moments. For some, faith and religion may be the answer, but this piece is more about the internal strength that we can all call upon.Opening in sombre mood, the first phase of the work symbolises the doubts we all have about ourselves and our lives. The opening phrase on solo clarinet appears throughout the piece and could be seen as the central idea of the work, the human spirit itself. The faster, central section is about the struggle to overcome the pain we experience and at bar 88 the moment of catharsis occurs. This signals a change of mood and from then on, the clarinet motif is transformed into a feeling of joy and optimism. We have entered the light.Duration: 8:30

Greek folk music is characterised by the sound of the 'buzuki' which is often used in combination with the clarinet, the mandolin, the violin and various types of tambourines. In Greek Folk Song Suite, Franco Cesarini has elaborated on three songs belonging to this most ancient tradition. The first, O Haralambis, is in 7/8 time, a characteristic of a popular folk dance called kalamatianos. Originally, the song O Haralambis was sung to 'tease' during weddings with the text of the song refering to a young man who refuses to marry. The second movement, Stu Psiloriti, refers to an ancient song from the island of Crete. The third movement of the suite is based on the song Vasilikos tha gino and is characterised by the sirtaki, probably the most popular Greek dance outside of Greece.
