Woodwind and percussion players usually are unfamiliar with the antiphonal brass choir tradition. I made this modern, more easily readable version of Bonelli's classic 1600 Toccata for flexible wind ensemble with optional percussion, so that as few as 8 players up to full symphonic band could play in this style. I've used it as a dramatic concert opener, with the second, smaller group positioned behind the audience. ~ Shelley Hanson

As I began this piece, it was as though I were entering a dream. The music was atmospheric, undefined, and somewhat disorienting. Gradually the material became more focused, but just in time to switch to a very different--though related--sound world, which became the second movement. This exciting work depicts the lively and sunny nature of the state of Florida. Opening with a brilliant and majestic section highlighting the state's bright and vibrant culture, a flowing melody follows, representing the calming winds and consistent breeze of the state. Dance is a large part of Florida's culture, especially in its southern region, and the 7/8 rhythm captures an Afro-Latin style dance movement. The chorale/hymn section is based on the "Florida Song," which is a traditional school song of many schools, including Florida A&M in Tallahassee. The work then recapitulates and moves toward a driving and joyful conclusion. An excellent contest/festival work! Duration: 4.45

The Portrait concludes with our heroes' return, featuring a recap of the opening theme augmented in the brass and accompanied by woodwind runs and exciting percussion. Phil Evans hails from the UK and served for 25 years in the Band of HM Royal Marines. Now resident in the USA he founded Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds in 2008, giving them the tag line An American Band with a British Accent, as he wanted to combine the best of both countries' band traditions. With this in mind, composer Philip Sparke decided to create a suite of British folk songs, scored with an American influence to fulfil the philosophy of the band's tag line.
