This solitary warrior is joined by others on the way, and together they defend those who cannot defend themselves. Less than two minutes long and using only the first 6 notes of the Bb concert scale, this is a great choice for a second semester concert and for bands with limited instrumentation. Use this piece to develop articulation technique and listening skills between the ensemble's sections. A great choice for concert and contest.

Eyes on the Stars was commissioned by the Surrey Police Band in 2022 in memory of George Rowland. George was a remarkable character. He was born in Vienna but spent his early days in Tuscany, coming to England with his family at the start of WW2, where he went on to be one of the pioneers of cancer research. He was an avid skier, tennis player and extremely keen musician. Wherever he went he joined a community band so when he and his family settled in Surrey he joined the Surrey Police Band. To them he was George who played bass clarinet, a polite chap with a lovely deep Surrey accent! In trying to fulfil the terms of a commission for a five-minute work I attempted to embrace the verve and aspirational nature of George and his overwhelmingly positive nature, hence the title Eyes on the Stars.- Rob WiffinFirst performed by the Surrey Police Band on 18 March 2023 at Emmanuel Church in Stoughton.Duration: 5.15

This is an arrangement of carols associated with Christmas night. The main song in this arrangement is O Holy Night but it also includes the opening phrase of Franz Gruber's Silent Night as an accompanying motif. The music starts with some lux argentum and then two horns play It came upon the midnight clear as a prelude to the main theme. The first iteration of this beautiful Christmas song should ideally be played on the cor anglais. However, it is cued for oboe or trumpet should a cor anglais not be available.O Holy Night was composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847, originally set to a French poem, Minuit, Chretiens (Midnight, Christians) and published as Cantique de Noel.Duration: 5.00
