Jug Blues and Fat Pickin' - Don Freund

Originally commissioned for the celebration of Tennessee's Homecoming '86, Jug Blues & Fat Pickin' is inspired by recordings of the Memphis Jug Band, the most recorded and perhaps most popular of the jug bands to spring up on Memphis' Beale Street in the late 1920's, and also bluegrass banjo pickin'. Freund's composition is a unique musical offering that melds blues elements with minimalist technique. (Grade 5) Dur: 8:00

Five Elizabethan Dances from 'Romeo & Juliet' - Don Freund

Five Elizabethan Dances is drawn from the music that sets the scene and provides the accompaniment for the Ballroom Scene from Don Freund's Romeo and Juliet: A Shakespearean Music Drama for singing actors and piano. The style of the dances is freely drawn from dances found in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book (music from ca. 1562 to 1612), spiced up with changing meters and chromatic twists of melody and harmony reflecting a more recent musical language. Each of the dances represents a pivotal scene-within-a-scene. Excludes part doubling: 2+1.2+EH(opt).3+EbCl+BCl+CltoCl(opt).2+Cbsn(opt): AATB Saxes: 3.4.3.2Euph.2 Tuba: Perc(5)

    ImPercynations - Steven Bryant

Using melodic fragments from each of the six movements of Percy Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy as foils for each other, Steven Bryant has created a unique and brash experiment in musical juxtaposition! Grainger described his work as a bouquet of musical wildflowers, and Bryant describes ImPercynations as a genetically-altered, crossbred, hybrid offspring...a musical Franken-flower. An unconventional gem. (duration: ca. 5:15)

Eternal Vigilance (The Long Brave Line) - Robert Jager

The result of a collaborative commission by the U.S. Air Force Academy Band, the U.S. Coast Guard Band, the U.S. Military Academy Band and the U.S. Naval Academy Band, this major work for band takes its title from a quote attributed to Thomas Jefferson, Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty, and a variation of the West Point motto, The Long Gray Line. Opening with a tribute to those who have gone before in service to our country, a solemn, noble theme is presented that reappears near the end of the composition. The main body of the work is a series of march-like themes and idiomatic fragments culminating in a glorious full-band fanfare. Following a restatement of the noble theme, a stirring coda brings the music to a climactic close. Dur: 8:30 (Grade 5) (E.B. Marks)

    Suite Dreams - Steven Bryant

For the second year in a row, composer Steven Bryant took home top prize in the prestigious NBA/Revelli Composition Contest. The winner for 2008, Suite Dreams, draws primarily from the inverted chaconne melody in Holst's First Suite in E-Flat, recasting it in a dreamlike atmosphere, almost as if (sometimes warped) memories of the original are drifting across the stage. Dur: 8:45 (Grade 5)

    First Light - Steven Bryant

The title First Light refers to the arrival of dawn - specifically the composer's experience of dawn in the mountains surrounding Lake Garda in northern Italy. There, the light of the sun arrives in distinct stages: the night sky begins to brighten quite early, though the sun remains hidden behind the mountains for several hours. Abruptly, the first direct ray of sunlight crests the mountaintop, bringing with it intense, palpable heat. The town below, nestled in the narrow space between the water's edge and the steep mountain slope, remains in darkness for a while longer, until the sun ultimately sends light cascading down the mountainside, illuminating everything. (Grade 5) Dur: 8:30

Purple Whispers - Richard L. Saucedo

This remarkable and descriptive work opens and closes with members of the ensemble whispering to one another, creating a soft yet chaotic effect. The simple poem is by the composer: Whispers move in colored flight, seeking signs of next twilight, purple as the violets grow, warm but rich for all to know. As the piece progresses, introduced by a solo piano, the listener is taken through a dynamic range of emotional tension and release before the quiet mood returns to close out this uniquely effective composition. Dur: 5:15 Recorded by the Marshall University Wind Symphony - Steve Barnett, conductor
