Old World Overture is written as a musical gift from the Old World to the New World and is dedicated to Mauricio Solano and the musicians and organisers of the Corazon Verde Festival (Green Heart) in Paraiso, Costa Rica. I have based this piece on traditional Balkan folk music heard while holidaying on the banks of Lake Ohrid in Macedonia in the Summer of 2013. Celestial Prospect - Wilfred Heaton
Wilfred Heaton's compositions have a worldwide appreciation and although his output was small it is work of the highest integrity and calibre. The history surrounding 'Celestial Prospect' is somewhat sketchy. The composer describes it as a re-casting of an earlier work written sometime in the 1940's, the score of which is now lost. The theme 'Come Comrades Dear' has been known from Christian Mission days and reflects the composer's penchant for old Salvation Army tunes which are simple and direct in character. The following 5 variations contain much interest and originality including a beautiful elegy to departed comrades.

Midnight Sleighride (Troika) - Sergei Prokofiev
The music from Lieutenant Kij? was Prokofiev's first attempt at composing film music. In 1933 he was commissioned by the Soviet Union to compose music for a film of the same name and he later adapted this music into an orchestral suite that has since become highly popular. Troika, which forms the 4th movement of this 5 movement suite, was composed to give the impression of a fast winter's journey on a troika which is a traditional sleigh pulled by three horses. With the inclusion of sleigh-bells in the orchestration it has been often associated with the Christmas period and still is to this day.

Pioneers of the Medway - Richard Phillips
The Salvation Army Band in my home town of Chatham, part of a conurbation of 5 towns in the South East of England known as the Medway Towns, celebrated their 135th anniversary in 2016 and this piece was composed as part of those celebrations.
