Imagine a band far off in the distance marching toward you - soft at first, the music becomes louder and louder: the red capes of the band sway in the wind, getting closer and closer. It was this image that inspired Flying Colors.Famed bandmaster Arthur Delamont always programmed a march in his concerts, and the hallmark of his band was their red capes. The work begins very softly with a distant snare drum beat. The trumpets enter quietly with the melody,and with each new melodic entry the music grows and intensifies to a roaring finish. This is a fresh new take on a march, and is sure to please players and audiences alike! Flying Colors is the third movement of A Tribute toArthur Delamont and was commissioned by the West Vancouver Youth Band. Dur: 3:10

This imaginary movie score uses modal melodies, exotic percussion and dramaticorchestration to create an epic music experience. In cinematic style, this work opens with a panoramic picture of the great Inca city of Machu Picchu and ends with a colorful procession towards the Temple of the Sun. The English composer Sir Edward Elgar wrote the five Pomp and Circumstance marches between 1901 and 1930, the time of the British Empire, when the colonial and strategic world power of England was at its peak. March No. 3 in C minor, although less well-known then March No.1, was regarded by the composer as the most successful of the marches in terms of composition technique and musical content. The dark colours of the minor tonality and the hopeful sounding cantabile theme are extremely impressive, giving the march its unique character.
