    Lincoln Portrait - Aaron Copland

    Lincoln Portrait was commissioned by Andre Kostelanetz for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in 1942. A stirring tribute to an eminent American, it includes fragments of songs from the Civil War era, sweeping original themes, anda narration drawn from Lincoln's own words. This transcription by Walter Beeler has become a staple in the repertoire for wind bands, and provides an impressive way to help celebrate the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth.     Hoe Down -from Rodeo - Aaron Copland

    Aaron Copland (1900-1990) has been called the Dean of American Composers. He was one of the first composers to use American folk idioms in his music. Hoe Down is taken from the ballad Rodeo, composed in 1942. From the ballet,Copland extracted Four Dance Episodes to form an orchestral suite for the concert hall: Buckaroo Holiday, Coral Nocturne, Saturday Night Waltz, and Hoe Down. Hoe Down uses the square-dance tunes of Bonaparte and McLeod's Reel.Polyrhtyhms are derived from the jazz idiom - thus, making the work light, humorous, and full of zest. (3:00)

    Buckaroo Holiday - Aaron Copland

    Buckaroo Holiday was written by the famous twentieth centuryAmerican composer Aaron Copland. It comes from the successfulcowboy ballet Rodeo, which Copland composed in 1942. BuckarooHoliday contains many syncopated rhythms, and convincinglyconveys cowboy life (the word buckaroo is derived from the Spanishword vaquero, meaning cowboy). However, some melodious lyricismis also present. This fine transcription for concert band has beenproduced by Ed Keeley and certainly does justice to the original.

The opening theme has adefinite American flavour, which is followed by a fugal section that evolves from simple tonal patterns to polytonality. After an intensely rhythmic third section, all elements are combined in a huge climax and coda that round offthe work.     Pennsylvania 6-5000 (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Myokoin, Masato

    In 1942 Glenn Miller voluntarily joined the army and founded the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band and with his music he kept up the morale of the troops. In December 1944 he boarded an aircraft in England that would never reach its destination (France) - the plane was never found. The patriotic legend of this great composer however lives on in his music. Pennsylvania 6-5000 was one of the greatest successes of his famous band and is as popular today as it was in the 1940's.

    Epic March (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Ireland, John - Brand, Geoffrey

    This march falls squarely in the tradition started by Elgars Pomp and Circumstance set through Waltons Crown Imperial and is a fitting companion to these all. Written in 1942 to a commission by the BBC the march was first performance in its original version in the Proms Concert Series at the Royal albert Hall. Unusually for a wind band piece there is an optional organ part, taken from Irelands original orchestral score.
