Castellum - Jan van der Roost
This work, in two movements, was written for the 50th anniversary of "Harmonie St. Cecilia" in Oudenburg, Belgium, and is dedicated to its conductor, Arne Wyntin.The first part is rather quiet and pastoral in character, and is written in a gently rocking 12/8 time. The tranquility of the area around the medieval town of Oudenburg, a rustic region not far from the North Sea, is expressed in a striking fashion. After a beautiful orchestral climax, the second part begins, which is inspired by the Roman past of Oudenburg. A somewhat oppressive and impending introduction leads to the musical reflection of an army parade: Oudenburg was a so-called "castellum," and the remains ofthe fortress are still visible in the current town plan. A more dynamic passage follows featuring the low brass. After that, the solemn rhythm of the parade is recaptured, culminating in a triumphant ending.

Mankind has always had the desire to fly. Initially we tried to imitate birds to fly, which eventually resulted in the invention of balloons, airships, gliders and powered aircrafts. The first airship in the world that could fly in a controlled way, was invented by Henri Giffard. This airship flew on September 25, 1852 from Paris to Trappes. The ship was 43 meters long and flew 8 km per hour over a distance of 27 km. Other key names for the many changes and developments of the aviation industry, are the Wright brothers on December 17, 1903 with their first motorized flight, of 12 seconds over a distance of 37 meters with a homemade motorized aircraft called the Flyer. Later the same day this record was improved by a flight of 60 seconds over a distance of 260 meters. The first flight across the Channel between England and France was made by Louis Blriot on July 25, 1909. The distance of about 45 km was covered in a time of 37 minutes. In 1910, the first woman, a French pilot (Raymonde de LaRouche), made her first solo flight. She was also the first woman who got a license to fly.This march is a tribute to the many years of development within the aviation industry and gives voice of the pride, the romance, the heroism and the status of this way of transportation.

TROIS NUANCES is a three movement work composed by Scott L. Hines for the Memphis Ballet Company in 2004. Originally for Piano only,it is a three movement work. The two fast movements surround a blues-like second movement. While it was not the composer's initial intent to write a movement based in the blues, that's what happened and it was very appropriate as Trois Nuances was danced on thestage of W.C. Handy Park on Beale Street, the site of the birth of the blues publishing industry. Hines was given a week to present a draft to the ballet company to be performed as it's opening piece of the 2004 season debut. Once the draft was approved, he had two days to finalize it. The first and third movements reflect the hurried and excited pace at which it was composed. Excellent repertoire from a contemporary American composer! Symphonic Orchestra. Instrument Parts. The old Norwegian name Ljodgata means the main road. This road (or path) has existed since the iron age. In 12 century christians walked from Oslo to Nidaros (Trondheim) to visit the Cathedral containing the tomb of King Olav the Holy. Part 1 The Tomb and the Church is a musical picture of religious activities in the area. The tomb of King Rakne, one of the largest graves in the northern Europa is now a monument in the area, even if Hovin Church has been a symbol of christianity sincethe 1400 century. Part 2 The Woods of Trandum Pictures the military acitivities that has been going on for more that 250 years. During the 2nd World War, an execution of innocent people took place in the woods. Part 3 Jetset Picture of the present.The international airport at Gardermoen has made the village Jessheim become a town. People now live moderne city lives.

Randy Crawford led R&B veterans the Crusaders on the transatlantic hit "Street Life" (1979). A specially re-recorded version was featured in the soundtrack for the films Sharky's Machine and Jackie Brown. The composer Joseph Leslie "Joe" Sample (February 1, 1939 September 12, 2014) was an American pianist, keyboard player, and composer. He was one of the founding members of the Crusaders. but he enjoyed also a successful solo career and guested on many recordings including Miles Davis, George Benson, Jimmy Witherspoon, B. B. King, Eric Clapton, Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, and the Supremes. Sample incorporated jazz, gospel, blues, Latin, and classical forms into his music. This arrangement can be used with a singer, but then need some attention to balance and please take away most melody lines. Electric Bass, Piano and Guitar are optional. If you would like to add an improvisation, please repeat bar 54 -62 without melody as many times you want. (Look at the piano part for chords).
