Appomattox - James L. Hosay
General Lee and General Grant are represented by their own themes in this expressive tone poem for band. The story of the Appomattox Courthouse meeting between the two military greats is one of extraordinary human drama, and Curnow effectively illustrates the heartbreaking trial and, finally, dignity experience by all involved. Field drum percussion and straight-muted trumpets and trombones give this an authentic historical sound.

This piece was composed in the summer of 2000, on commission of the Whightull Wind Ensemble. Seaside Road is a march in two-four time. The work begins with a tempestuous sound, followed by a light passage. Featuring, amongst others, your Bass Clarinet and Euphonium soloists in the trio section, the work builds towards an agile tutti before concluding with a powerful closing section. Refraction - Jan Hadermann
Refraction is a work that uses the entire band and all the colours it can possibly produce. As the title suggests, it was inspired the fascinating physical phenomenon known as refraction. Just like light is split and disbursed into all its colours, the main theme is split into little motives. As the individual motives are disbursed throughout the band, different sections become more prominent, only to recede into the general texture again. The work concludes with the fusion of all these elements in a monumental climax of movement, sound and colour.

Buckeye Rondo was commissioned by the Ohio State University for their annual middle school honor band festival. Composer Larry Clark used this opportunity to write a piece in a rondo form, but with some modern twists. The main theme is very catchy, and is used in various harmonic treatments and style. The episodes of the rondo as is common, increase in length and diversity as the piece develops. What a great way to introduce this form to young bands, and on top of that, the piece is infectious and expertly scored to make your band sound their best.

Chant and Savage Band - Brian Balmages

While well within the ability of young musicians, this piece has an uncharacteristically mature sound that will captivate your audience. After a mesmorizing lyrical opening, percussion begins the savage dance that grows more and more powerful as the piece progresses.
