KARMAN LINE, The (Prestige Concert Band Extra Score) - Meechan, Peter

Extra Score. This work takes inspiration from photos taken at the Karman Line (an invisible line 100 kilometres above sea level and is the boundary where the atmosphere of Earth ends, and outer space begins). It portrays the vastness of Space, the mechanics of Space (including shuttles and astronauts), as well as stunning views of the Earth. The main thematic material for the piece is modal, and is developed from key pitches and intervals that define the character and nature of the mixolydian mode. These are gradually introducted as accented notes over the opening ostinato. This modal music is gradually juxtaposed with a more conventional minor scale originally creating conflict and tension, but eventually harmony between these two sound-worlds. Kartoon Klassics (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Shaffer, David

We all know and love the wonderful characters from the classic cartoon adventures of yesteryear. David Shaffer has crafted this clever reincarnation of music from those classics. Opening with Brahms' "Hungarian Dance #5" we can all imagine our favorite cartoon rabbit in his many adventures and mis-adventures. With Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" we hear his death defying escapes from his adversaries. Finally, Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody #2" gives us the musical tension that brought these cinematic classics to their comic conclusions. Multiple percussion effects and clever instrumental writing will make this a favorite for years to come. Very entertaining! Duration: 2.00

This rhapsody reflects the four seasons combined with the natural scenery that characterises the city of Quebec and its surrounding region. Autumn is depicted with hunting horns playing in the forest, followed by a pastoral melody, principally in the woodwinds. Winter in the mountains is poetic and romantic. Spring arrives with a frolicsome and playful theme mirroring the start of new life. Soon everything flowers lushly, and the music swells into the full sounding energy of summer, bringing the work to a brilliant and dynamic close. A great work for any time of year.Duration: 14:30
