The musical tells the story of Louis-Joseph Marchand, Napoleon's footman who is involved in the dispute over the emperor's inheritance and the unsolved mystery of his death. Using a variety of musical idioms from diatonic to "sound mass", aleatoric to metric, vocal to synthetic, the composer hs woven a tonal picture of the pathos, triumph and tragedy of this Old Testament episode.
