Drawing inspiration from books and films of fantasy adventure, Johnnie's three-movement suite explores a variety of descriptive moods and styles. The first movement (Wizards) has a noble and grand flavor, while the second (Elves) is more playful and mischievous in design. The concluding movement (Talking Animals) uses rhythmic energy and mixed meters in creating a bit of a rambunctious setting. Themes from the earlier movements are then brought back for the grand finale.Duration: 8:00

Fantasy Tales (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Swerts, Piet

This work, reminiscent of a film score, describes the history of the Dutch town Horn. A broad lyrical theme, played by the horns, depicts the history of this town on the river Meuse. A cheerful Allegro represents rural life around the town and its castle. Following this the horn theme returns and the music changes dramatically. A drum roll symbolises the times of war that the town and castle have known. The threatening music eventually develops once more into the hopeful horn theme, a sign of reconstruction and the future.Duration: 10:45

Drawing on the rich tradition of Irish music as inspiration, John Williams uses original themes, but in an Irish style, in creating a sweeping film score that beautifully captures and enhances the moods portrayed in the film. In taking a lateral look at Bizet's famous Farandole, I decided to omit the full opening statement of the old Provencal tune Marcho dei Rei (March of the Kings), opting instead to make oblique references to it. The combination of this old Christmas song with another traditional Provencal Melody Danso dei Chivau-Frus (Dance of the Hobbyhorse) originally made by Bizet's friend Ernest Guiraud when he compiled Suite No.2 from Bizet's music to the play L'Arlesienne.The farandole is a traditional Provencal dance in which men and women hold hands in a chain and wind through the streets following a musician playing pipe and tabor. In the case of Danso dei Chivau-Frus, the lead dancer would wear a horse's head made of papier mache or something similar.I have attempted to stay true to the spirit of the Farandole and the contrapuntal devices added by Guirand while adding a few touches of interest and harmonic colour here and there.- Rob Wiffin
